A Legal Battle Brews Over Whether Detroit Students Have A Right To Literacy

A lawsuit filed nearly a year ago over the conditions in Detroit schools had its first day in court Thursday, but it could be a month before a judge rules whether it can proceed. The suit, filed in September on behalf of seven Detroit students, argues that Gov. Rick Snyder and state education officials have deprived city students of their right to literacy by not spending adequately on local schools. The 136-page complaint paints a bleak picture of life in the city’s schools, describing cond...

The City of Detroit’s August primary contained some surprises for the pollster and pundits. Detroit Mayor In a mayoral race that many analysts believed will be close, early indications aren’t good going into the general election for challenger Coleman Young, Jr. Incumbent Detroit mayor Mike Duggan has received 69% of the vote compared to second place Coleman Young, Jr. with 29%. No other candidate received more than 1% of the vote. Last we checked, a 2-1 margin isn’t a close race, and i...

VIDEO: Meet DeMeeko Williams, A Man Working To Get Water Turned Back On For Detroiters

A recent study here in Detroit linked greater health issues for those who’ve had their water shut off. And there are a lot of water shutoffs in the city. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) can’t tell us yet the number of water shutoffs so far this year but Bridge Magazine, a Detroit Journalism Cooperative partner, reported that last year more than 27,000 Detroit homes had their water shut off because of unpaid bills. PICS: Inside The New Dual Brewery Opening In Royal Oak

There’s something brewing in Royal Oak, and it’s a different kind of concept. I was able to check out the newest Jolly Pumpkin location in Royal Oak today — but this is a kind of unique situation as the Dexter-based brewery is partnering with Royal Oak based Bastone Brewery in a dual concept. Jolly Pumpkin will open to the public tomorrow Tuesday, August 8. Both Bastone Brewery and Jolly Pumpkin have worked together behind the scenes since they opened in 2004. Ron Jeffries from Jolly Pumpk...

Charivari To Fill West Riverfront Park With Magical House Beats This Weekend

As far as events go, you can’t get more beautiful than Charivari. The festival, for me, reminds me of when I fell in love with Detroit music. The days when you’d have good times with good people, dancing to amazing music from DJs in tents not yards but feet away from you, and it didn’t cost a zillion dollars. Some of my best memories of this city have been created at this festival. So this is a completely biased review. If you have only experienced electronic music (especially House Mus...
