VIDEO: Vice News Takes A Look At The Mysterious Windsor Hum And Zug Island

It’s one of the enduring mysteries of the Detroit area – a hum that’s apparently heard on the Canadian side of the Detroit River, but not on the American. It’s called the “Windsor Hum” by many, and it’s alleged that it comes from the noxious Zug Island, an island created by man by digging out a second canal from the Rouge River. However, due to a lack of access to the island itself, a report done by the Canadian government can’t be certain. Where Zug Island is today at one point in history...

The Campaign Is On To Restore Newsboy Shelter On Belle Isle From 1911

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Belle Isle Conservancy are looking to restore a historic shelter on the island and say they’re in need of your help. There is currently a fundraiser to raise $50,000 by June 30 to restore the Newsboy Shelter (Shelter #1). This shelter was built in 1911 and is one of the oldest structures on Belle Isle. The Newsboy Shelter got it’s name due to the proximity to the newsboy statue that was dedicated to the city of Detroit in the early 1900s b...

Check Out The Newly Reopened Inn At 97 Winder

There are houses in Detroit that stick out in my memory. Most of them are the ones that I will never have the money to buy. Like 97 Winder for example. I wish I had the $2.5 million back in 2011 when the property went on the market the first time. It took a few years, but The Inn at 97 Winder finally sold last December. The former Harvey Mansion will continue to be an inn, and it is managed by Access Hotels and Resorts. There was a soft opening in April, the official Grand Opening w...

Live It Up This Summer With These 8 Mixed Drinks With A Michigan Theme

Recently, your crack Daily Detroit crew gathered together to unwind for a little house party. As the night wore on and the drinks flowed, the talk turned, as it does, from blogging strategy to cocktail recipes with a Michigan or Detroit theme. I instantly thought of the “Nuge,” a perfectly trashy drank named after — and fully befitting the legacy of — Detroit’s own Ted Nugent. A friend of mine named Marc McFinn, the former singer of Ann Arbor punk band Mazinga, served it to me in a plastic cup...

The Eight Mile Boulevard Association has chosen the artist whose winning design will become a mural on the wall of a vacant building near Livernois to kick off its Art on 8 program. Ndubisi Okoye is a Detroit-based artist and illustrator who has done murals in Detroit for Our/Detroit Vodka building and a design-install project for the General Motors International Singapore Office Project. His work has appeared on HGTV. The project is funded by a $5,800 grant from Mercedes Benz Financial Serv...

FIRST LOOK: Inside The New Spirit of Detroit Plaza In Downtown Detroit

One of our most-talked about stories last week was the announcement that Woodward was going to be closed to cars between Jefferson and Larned for a new “Spirit of Detroit Plaza.” Today it officially opened and so we decided to go check out the 20,000 square foot space. There were three food trucks. Look, Cornhole! Also, dancers performed in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue. Here are a couple of examples of the barriers around it. The above is along Larned, below, Jeffe...

Looking For A Rooftop Patio In Oakland County? Social Kitchen Is The Place To Be

Even though I live ten minutes from downtown Birmingham I rarely go there. Let’s face it: Getting around there can be a pain, especially if you’re not familiar with it. However, I think I might actually have a reason to go there now. Last night I was invited to a media event at Social Kitchen to check out their new rooftop patio. Since this was a planned event, this isn’t a normal service review where we show up unannounced. But the views were great and the food delicious. This s...

The Motor City Will Say Goodbye To Cars In Front Of Iconic Spirit Of Detroit Statue

Walkability and urban spaces are taking the nation by storm, especially in cities. Multiple reports say that the “Spirit of Detroit Plaza” will be constructed in front of the Spirit of Detroit, closing down Woodward between Jefferson and Larned in downtown Detroit to all vehicle traffic. It will be turned into a pedestrian plaza that will be officially announced today. It’s expected that this will be a three month trial and then the project will be evaluated. Below is a rendering from the...

Your City 5: Things To Do For The Weekend Of June 9-11

If you were hoping for a laid back weekend my suggestion is to put those plans on hold and giddy-up and get out the door. Detroit is going to be hopping this weekend, and if you miss it, you’re missing out. Let’s get this show started. Crash Detroit Benefit Concert One of my favorite festivals every summer is the Crash Detroit Festival. It is basically a street band extravaganza with bands coming from around the country to perform in Detroit. This Friday night there will be a benefit co...

No Shawarma Yet: Bucharest Livernois Location Close But Not Quite Ready

If there’s one thing you don’t do on the Internet in Detroit, it’s tease people with shawarma. When reached for comment: “We can not confirm that...

No Music, No Art, No Gym, Overcrowded Classrooms And Teacher Shortages: The Journey Of Detroit's New Superintendent Starts Here

Detroit schools have been buzzing these last two weeks with what feels like a fresh start. A new superintendent —  Nikolai Vitti — has landed in the city and started his job as the first new leader of what is officially a new district. He uses words like “transformation” and “vision” and “hope” to describe a future when Detroit schools will begin to address the intensive challenges that have contributed to some of the lowest test scores in the nation. He sees Detroit becoming “a mecca of imp...

Tesla Pops Up A Mobile Gallery Outside Of The Shinola Store In Midtown

Tesla just can’t stop poking at the Detroit 3 in their backyard. Here’s their latest provocation. The California-based automaker may not have the unit sales to be considered a “large” automaker, but their mindshare is second to none – so much so that the company is now worth more than Ford Motor Company while selling far fewer units. At Christmastime, they set up a gallery store in Somerset Mall, and now through June 11 they have a pop-up “gallery” outside the Midtown Shinola store in Detroi...
