What to know and where to go in Metro Detroit

Let's Go Fly A Kite On Belle Isle During The Inaugural Detroit Kite Festival

There is something about seeing kites flying in the sky that brings back memories of my childhood. I remember going to the park as a family to fly our kites on particularly windy days. My little brother and I would spend the time trying to see who could keep their kite in the air the longest. It has been a long time since I’ve flown a kite. However I know it is only a matter of time before I start showing my son the joys of seeing a colorful kite dance in the wind. The Detroit Kite Festiva...

VIDEO: Motorcyclist Rides Through A Brick Wall And Lives To Tell The Tale

It’s not every day you see video of a motorcycle going through a brick wall. Let alone when the motorcyclist lives. But that’s exactly what the Allen Park Police Department is sharing today, with the permission of the rider. A man who is now nicknamed “Wrecking Ball” (his real name hasn’t been shared) by his friends drove through a brick wall after an equipment function at Southfield and Allen roads in Allen Park. Here’s the video. Although he suffered some broken bones, the human...

8 Before And After Pictures Of Detroit's Beautiful Book Tower Coming Back To Life

The building at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Grand River has a long history, and is one of the most ornate exteriors in the city of Detroit, and possibly the United States. For years the Book Tower was ridiculed as one of Detroit’s ugliest buildings. It turns out when the exterior gets a deep cleaning its intricate art that sits high above the city streets comes to life. Although some of us always appreciated the structure for its unique design. It’s a rare Renaissance-style sk...

What Downtown Detroit Is Actually Lacking Is Detroit Style Pizza

Downtown Detroit might not need any more burger joints according to the food critic of Detroit’s paper of record. He might be right. But the whole open letter from Mark Kurlyandchik got me thinking about what downtown, Midtown, and New Center is actually lacking when it comes to restaurants. I’m no seasoned food critic, just a lover of food – but I think I have an answer. Detroit style pizza. Sure there is Niki’s, but is it even that good? And that’s just one place. Pizza Papalis doesn’t...

Three Dogs That Were Just Right From Detroit Dog Company

Tucked just off of Main Street in downtown Royal Oak is the Detroit Dog Company. An attractive storefront that you’d easily find in any other big city, Detroit Dog Company seems to be well-geared for the late night nosh crowd. Instead of having some dogs after drinking, I decided to break tradition and do it beforehand. And it was a wise choice, because not only are the dogs filling but they’re tasty and I would have missed that a few bourbons in. Let’s walk through them. First up – the Slim...

"Mike Ilitch Boulevard" Could Be Coming To Part Of Woodward Avenue

Mike Ilitch was 87 when he passed away earlier this year, and in many ways he left a mark on the city and region. Whether it was through his Little Caesars Pizza, the Detroit Red Wings or Detroit Tigers, or many other ventures, he’s a figure who loomed large on the Detroit stage. To honor him, a bi-partisan bill with support from state senator (and mayoral candidate) Coleman Young Jr. and the most recent guy who got caught in online controversy over guns in Detroit, state senator Rick Jones, a...

Electronic Proof Of Registration Is Now Accepted In Michigan

Anyone who has been pulled over before knows the drill, fumbling through your glovebox for that little proof of registration card. Thanks to a new law signed by Governor Rick Snyder, those days are in the past if you have an electronic proof of registration on your mobile device. It was sponsored by Michigan state representative Peter Lucido (R-36), serving part of Macomb County. “As technology continues to rapidly evolve, it’s important that our state’s laws adapt to these changes,” Snyder...

Detroit is still in many ways the home of the American auto industry. But a new report out by Bankrate.com shows that Metro Detroit is second to last when it comes to being able to actually afford those cars, compared to our incomes. Metro Detroit ranked 24 out of 25 regions across the nation when it comes to being able to afford a new car, according to a new affordability survey. Bankrate used the “20/4/10” rule as their guide. They say you should aim to put down at least 20 percent of a ve...
