What to know and where to go in Metro Detroit

Metro Detroit Unemployment Rate Drops To 4%

Up here at the Mackinac Policy Conference, business and political leaders may cheer the news that new data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the unemployment rate for Metro Detroit dropped to 4 percent in April. This is in line with the national trend, where non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates were lower in April than a year earlier in 322 of the 388 metropolitan areas. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn area saw a drop from 4.6 percent to 4 percent year over year f...

City Of Detroit Reports Budget Surplus

It wasn’t that long ago that the city of Detroit went through a historic bankruptcy. Now, for a second year in a row, Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration is reporting a deficit-free budget. This is important for two reasons. It means there are dollars to make improvements (we’ll get into what the Mayor has in mind in a moment), and it’s one more step toward exiting active oversight by the Detroit Financial Review Commission a restriction imposed under terms of the 2014 bankruptcy. One of a nu...

The Mackinac Policy Conference: Benefits, Bourbon, And B.S.

As I’m now starting my fourth year on the island attending the Mackinac Policy Conference, I can tell you that most of the rumors you may have heard about this event are true. 1,700 or so leaders in various parts of metro Detroit’s business, political and nonprofit establishment have completed their annual migratory trip to the Grand Hotel, with the conference agenda officially starting tomorrow. And without fail, the same annual criticisms are leveled by some, especially on the left, that i...

Looming Financial Threats Could Undermine ‘Fresh’ Start For New Detroit District, Says Report

The creation of a new school district last year gave Detroit schools a break from years of crippling debt, allowing the new district to report a healthy budget surplus going into its second year. It’s the first time since 2007 that the city’s main school district has ended the year with a surplus. But a report released this morning — just days after Superintendent Nikolai Vitti took over the district — warns of looming financial challenges that “could derail the ‘fresh’ financial start that...
