Check Out These 13 Michigan Made Products From All Things Detroit

This past Sunday I went to the special Mother’s Day All Things Detroit market presented by Ask Jennyfer. I rarely need an excuse to go to an artisan market but we also wanted to do an updated round up on some great small businesses. A few years ago we did a list of 10 Michigan-Made Things We Loved At All Things Detroit, so it is certainly time to do a new list. All Things Detroit has grown every year. If you go back to check out our old list you can see it was only utilizing Shed 3 in East...

Six More Tiny Homes Appear In Detroit's Dexter-Linwood Neighborhood

Last year, we told you about the completion of a tiny house built by the nonprofit Cass Community Social Services. They’ve been busy building their next six homes, under construction now and scheduled to be complete in the fall. The homes are located just off of Woodrow Wilson south of Glendale on Monterey, near the Highland Park/Detroit border. As we wrote about last year, they’re designed to serve low income people. Rent for the homes is based off the square footage of each home. If some...

Detroit's QLINE Streetcar Could Go Much Faster. Here's What Needs To Happen

One of the most anticipated – and debated – additions to Detroit’s streets is that of the QLINE. That’s the 3.3 mile long streetcar that begins service down Woodward Avenue on May 12. One of the early complaints about the QLINE online is the speed of the streetcar. End to end, it takes about 25 minutes (as timed by our riding it today). Here’s the thing. It could go much faster, if there were more governmental cooperation. It turns out the speed of the streetcar isn’t as much limited by mech...

Here's Where To Drink In Detroit Like Don Draper

Even though we’re coming up on the two year anniversary of the grand finale of Mad Men, it’s clear the show and its characters have left an indelible mark on collective pop culture. Try and find a new office or commercial renovation that isn’t dripping with mid-century modern, or “hip” creative workplace that doesn’t come equipped with an in-office bar cart to delight the would be Peggy’s, Pete’s, and Harry’s of today’s millennial workforce. The “Incredulous Don Draper” meme (you know the on...

New Maps Show 20 Years Of Racial Change In Metro Detroit In Sharp Detail

One of the things that the racial makeup of the Detroit region has done consistently over the last couple decades is change. Block by block, Metro Detroit as a whole has seen tremendous change in the time from 1990-2010. But what does that actually look like? Previous maps that relied on census data only let us get down to 3 kilometer chunks, or a little more than a square mile. However, new maps by a University of Cincinnati geography professor are the most detailed map of racial diversity...

‘TechHire Bootcamp’ Launches 10 Week Program To Train Detroit Residents To Be Software Developers

One of the gaps in Detroit’s comeback is the skills gap, especially when it comes to residents and the increase of new technology jobs in the city. Although many of the new jobs in the city require a degree or technical training, just 13.1 percent of Detroit residents have a college degree. To help bridge this, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Grand Circus announced a new 10-week program that will provide training and mentorship for Detroit residents interested in becoming entry-level developer...
