Who Are We Building Detroit For?

Over the last year or so, there has been a common thread when it comes to comments when we post about Detroit and development. It’s summed up well by this comment on today’s news of the new $77 million development on the site of the former Wigle Recreation Center. This leads to a larger question. What is the Detroit we want to build, and who is it for? Do we want to build a Detroit flush with out-of-town money, but prices out of reach for most people here? Or do we want our efforts to f...

Dabls Creates Mural To Tell The Story Of A Company That Invested In The City Before It Was "Hot"

Cindy Pasky often spends her Saturdays mornings at Eastern Market buying food, flowers, maybe a little wine, and checking out the shops and art. On one trip she admired the work of Detroit mural artist Olayami Dabls and reached out to him to create a piece for her company, Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3). He agreed and Pasky commissioned a 25-foot long piece that would tell the story of her company, founded in the city in 1990, and the mission it holds dear. “Dabls was incredible to work w...

OPINION: New DPS Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti Deserves Broad-Based Support

As a former Western High School teacher I’ve watched the selection process of the new superintendent from afar and, at times, chuckled to myself.  I’ve read the stories about the candidacy of Alycia Merriweather and her supporters — all well deserved. I thought all of that ended in March when she was not included in the final pool of candidates, but now in the post “What Detroiters Say New Schools Superintendent Nicolai Vitti Should Tackle First” is quick to rehash the views of a high school a...

This City Had Their Streetlights Repossessed. Now Some Are Getting Light Thanks To Solar Power

To say Highland Park has seen better days is an understatement. Highland Park, a 2.98 square mile enclave city centered around Woodward Avenue is where Ford and Chrysler made thousands of cars, has been ravaged by the economic downturn and de-industrialization of America. In 2011 to help solve a financial crisis where the city of Highland Park owed $4 million to DTE Energy it did not have, the bulk of streetlights – 1,400 poles, lights and and everything – were removed from the city. Altho...
