OPINION: Supporting Financial Literacy Is An Investment In Southeastern Michigan’s Future

Each April, Financial Literacy Month offers an important opportunity to educate consumers on the fundamentals of personal finance – from how checking accounts and credit cards work to how to establish a basic household budget. This should be a year-round commitment by our community because it is so fundamentally important to making financially responsible decisions integral to the everyday lives of our residents. Financial literacy can also be an issue for entrepreneurs and small business owne...

New "City Of Champions" Shirt Released To Commemorate A Magical Year In Detroit Sports History

In 1935-36 season was a very special one for sports in Detroit. The season saw the rise of mighty Joe Louis in boxing, baseball’s Detroit Tigers winning their first World Series, football’s Detroit Lions winning their first NFL championship (this was pre-Super Bowl), and hockey’s Detroit Red Wings winning their first NHL championship. It’s a rare honor Detroit holds to have all three sports team win championships at basically the same time. To commemorate this, the Day of Champions in Mich...

Motor City Comic Con To Bring 300 Media & Movie Icons To Metro Detroit

As a teenager, I walked into the Motor City Comic Con for the first time. There I met Mart Nodell. He was a fairly old man, but it was a thrill, which only increased when he remembered me at the show every year until his death. Most people who read this probably haven’t the faintest idea who Nodell was or what he did. He was the creator of the Golden Age Green Lantern, the original character from the 1940s. The creator of an icon was talking to me. That was longer ago than I may like to admi...

Avalon is one of those names that has become synonymous with Detroit’s current revitalization efforts. Opening in 1997 in the Cass Corridor, Avalon’s founders Ann Perrault and Jackie Victor invested in Detroit when, as the story they tell goes, even when their landlord on Willis Street said “this neighborhood isn’t ready for windows.” But put in windows they did. And so it began. Now, with multiple locations already under their belt, they’re opening a downtown cafe. But Perrault and Vic...
