Today marks the official beginning of the end of the Pontiac Silverdome. No exact timeline has been set, but there has been a consent agreement struck between Pontiac Mayor Deirde Waterman and the owners of the stadium to tear down the former home of the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons and many other events. “We have reached a point where we must say goodbye to what was once one of the world’s greatest venues,” said Andreas Apostolopoulos, the CEO of Triple Investment Group (that also owns th...

Yes, That's A Video Of A Kangaroo On A Leash In Detroit

One of the reasons to love Detroit is that it has a wonderful weird quality about it. You really never know what you’re going to see one day to the next. Weird in that sometimes, you’re going to see a video on Twitter of a guy on his horse as if we’re partying like it’s 1899 on Seven Mile. He’s been around the city for awhile now. Today on Twitter a video is circulating of what appears to be a man with a Kangaroo on a leash on Birchcrest Street in Detroit (that street is in the University Di...

The New Under Armour Store In Downtown Detroit Has An Opening Date

It looks like we officially have an opening date for the new Under Armour Detroit Brand House located downtown. We reported about the new location back in November of 2016: Under Armour often sells at other retailers, but this Brand House concept is region-specific (expect a lot of local sports team gear) and has a lot more than the training apparel they’re known for. Brand Houses in other cities also include fishing and hunting gear, running and basketball sneakers, and, according to the Ba...

Currently one in five children in Michigan worry about hunger and 300,000 school-aged children are eligible for free or reduced school lunch. The non profit is currently raising money to provide one million meals for hungry children around Southeast Michigan. For the...

Chicago's Honey Butter Fried Chicken is Coming to Detroit in April to Pop Up

It seems like Detroit has been attracting a lot of chefs from Chicago lately between Maccabees Traders, Voyager, and Thomas Lent from the Foundation Hotel.  There are two more chefs coming over from the Windy City in April to do a pop up – and as we all know, pop ups can sometimes be forerunners of something more lasting. Christine Cikowski and Josh Kulp, the chef/owners of Honey Butter Fried Chicken will be coming to Detroit for a weekend of pop ups at Russell Street Deli and Grey Ghost....

A First-Timers Pocket Guide to Marche du Nain Rouge

Not many cities have their own unique holiday. I would venture to guess that of those that do none are as decidedly as quirky, macabre, and spirited as Detroit’s very own Marche du Nain Rouge. Part festival, parade, and costume party Nain Rouge is at its core a celebration of catharsis. And what better way to celebrate the release of our proverbial demons than with booze, music, and camaraderie. Before you enjoy your first dalliance onto into Sundays revelry however, I’d like to impart a few tip...

Have A Formal Dress Taking Up Space In Your Closet? Why Not Donate It To The Comerica Bank Prom Dress Drive

Prom season is upon us. That means high school girls from around the area will be looking for the perfect dress, shoes, purse, and jewelry. It’s been a while since I have gone to prom (like seventeen years), but I remember getting outfitted for prom costing my parents a small fortune. Not being able to afford a dress shouldn’t get in the way of someone being able to go to prom. This is where Comerica and Hope Closet comes in. This year Comerica and Hope Closet are holding a Prom Dress driv...

Macomb And Oakland Counties See Population Gains, Wayne Drops Says Census

When it comes to the newly released 2016 U.S. Census population estimates, two of three counties in the tri-county area saw minor population gains from 2015-2016 while Wayne County had the second largest population drop in the nation. Oakland County gained 3,696 people in the last year. Macomb, 3,223. And Wayne County lost 7,696. The estimates, released to the public today, show a continued shift outward for Metro Detroit. Statewide, the momentum of population gain is moving west to Kent C...

Downtown Detroit Is Getting A New Bar & Arcade Thanks To Two High School Friends

It’s the kind of thing that one might dream of doing. Opening up an arcade with food and drinks, and being surrounded by your favorite video games in the heart of a major downtown. Well, Wael Gharbie and Mohamed Badaoui are doing just that with “Ready Player One,” opening in a former tobacco factory in downtown Detroit (if you didn’t know, it used to be a big industry here). We talked to Gharbie about their venture that mixes video games, booze and fun that is aiming to open in late May or e...

When it comes to servicing refugees, Freedom House is a special place in our country. Freedom House is a local organization that provides temporary housing for people who are seeking asylum from persecution located in Southwest Detroit. Earlier this year news broke that the Department of Housing and Urban Development would not be renewing the grants needed to keep Freedom House operating. The funding will be for 2017/2018 fiscal year. Funding beyond 2018 is not guaranteed, so Freedom House i...

Ever Wanted To Turn An Old School In Detroit Into Housing? Here's Your Chance (PICS)

The idea of turning an old school into something else is a bar conversation many dreamers and developers have had, but the chances to do it with a building that isn’t too far gone are few and far between. Today, Daily Detroit had the chance to check out the old Transfiguration School Building that opened in 1926 in Detroit’s Banglatown neighborhood. If you’re not familiar with Banglatown, think up Mound Road, and just north of Hamtramck. It’s a neighborhood that has different demographics th...

DJ Khaled Tells Detroit Students To Win As Part Of Launch For Get Schooled Detroit Program

None other than Snapchat and music star DJ Khaled is getting into the encouraging Detroiters to graduate high school. We’ve embedded the video above. It’s all part of a push by Get Schooled and the Detroit College Access Network (DCAN), a pair of nonprofits aimed at improving college access and success to push the new Get Schooled Detroit, what they’re describing as a one-stop resource customized for Detroit students to help them understand how to prepare for, apply to and pay for college. “...

Detroit's Own Mardi Gras-Style Party, Marche du Nain Rouge, Returns Sunday To The Cass Corridor

The Nain Rouge is, depending who you talk to, Detroit’s scourge or, in a way, our mascot. Either he’s the bringer of doom and misfortune, or some would say that you can spot him enjoying the city at the Aquarium. An annual Detroit tradition that started with just 300 people and now has grown to more than 6,000, The Marche du Nain Rouge returns for an 8th year this Sunday, March 26. The party kicks off at noon at the corner of Cass and Canfield in Midtown and the parade will depart at 1 p.m. do...
