An Evening Of Stories: "School Days" With The Secret Society Of Twisted Storytellers & Chalkbeat

There is something special about listening to someone tell their story, and storytelling events have become pretty popular in the past few years. Every month The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers holds an evening of storytelling at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The next evening of storytelling is this Friday, March 17. The theme for the evening is “School Days.” The education news organization Chalkbeat reached out to Twisted Storytellers to put together an...

How Changes To Michigan’s Ranking System Hurt Schools Like Cass Tech, Help DeVos Family Charter School

Some of Detroit’s most celebrated selective schools saw their standings plunge on the state’s most recent school rankings. Renaissance High School was one of the highest ranked schools on Michigan’s 2014 Top to Bottom schools list, scoring in the 98th percentile, better than 98 percent of state schools. But when the state in January released its latest ranking, based on 2016 test scores, the school had dropped to the 48th percentile, putting it slightly below the state average. Cass Technica...

Having a few artists in the family, it’s amazing how they can repurpose things and make beautiful items out of what at first seems like nothing. But that “nothing” is something, and this is a town that’s always looking for a good deal. So when got word that the organizers of Detroit Rummage and Detroit Artist Bazaar have once again combined the two annual sales events into one called the Detroit Artist Clearance & Artist-to-Artist Sales Event, we thought we’d share. The sale on April 2, 20...

Historic Durfee Middle School On Detroit’s West Side Aims To Become Mixed-Use Community Innovation Center

One of the scourges of Detroit’s depopulation has been the empty school buildings left behind. As students continue to leave the public school district in Detroit, in the wake are left many hulks of buildings smack dab in the neighborhoods of the city. For the last 90 years, the building that houses Durfee Middle School has been serving the community. It would be quite a negative impact to the community for another such structure to meet the same fate. With the elementary and middle school s...

31.3 Reasons To Love Detroit On #313Day

It’s that time of year again. Although Chicago has recently picked up the ball with #312Day thanks to Goose Island beer, Detroit’s original #313Day reigns supreme in our humble opinion as the best unofficial regional holiday of them all for civic pride. Because #313Day is to celebrate love for Detroit, let’s set aside the problems (for now) and remember what’s great about the Motor City. 1. Summers on Belle Isle There’s nothing better than the sun on Belle Isle’s beach, or enjoying t...

Detroit Mass Mob is, quite literally, a religious experience. The concept is simple. Detroit Mass Mob picks a church and you come to Mass there. As they say, no dancing required. As a group they’re kicking off their fourth season with their thirtieth mass mob that provides a great way to experience the Detroit’s area’s historic churches. This grassroots event allows you to not only enjoy the architecture and communal experience of an important part of Detroit’s past and present, but calls at...

Your Detailed St. Patrick’s Day Drinking And Dining Itinerary

To begin, I think it’s important to start by explaining what this is not. This isn’t a comprehensive list of all the chintzy St. Patrick’s Days celebrations taking place at countless bars from Ypsilanti to Utica and just about everywhere else in the metro area. There are plenty of other resources and lists for what drink specials are where and who has the cheapest green beer. This isn’t a guide to where to pound $5 Bud Light tall-boys during the St. Patrick’s Parade along Michigan Avenue. The...

Top Of Downtown Church Steeple Bent In Big Windstorm

A piece of Detroit history and one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the United States sustained some damage thanks to Detroit’s winds on Wednesday. The top of the steeple at Fort Street Presbyterian Church in Detroit was bent due the winds that Detroit’s City Airport registered at 61 miles per hour at one point. Fort Street Presbyterian was built in 1855 and you can see the damage from a few blocks away if you look from Griswold and Fort Street, where we first noticed...

He’s from the Metro Detroit area but has made a name in Los Angeles consulting with the James Beard-nominated Shibumi as well as the critically acclaimed smoke.oil.salt. He’s a partner in Maccabees Traders. The resp...

DTE Outage Map Shows Widespread Effects Of Wednesday's Winds

Although the fancy DTE outage map is down, there is an power outage map by zip code that the company is manually updating every half hour. We’ve turned that map from 9:45 a.m. – 5:15 p.m. into an animated gif to see the progress of repair work by zip code. To best understand the map, know that this is by zip code and not to the specific neighborhood and block level like the regular map that isn’t currently online. A detailed map is available if you download the DTE app for your smartphone on...
