Defeating Detroit's Lead Poisoning Problem, House By House

Back in 2015 Maria heard a knock on the door of her home in Southwest Detroit. When she opened it she found a team member from Green and Healthy Homes Initiative Detroit-Wayne County. A collaboration of nearly 50 partner organizations, it is committed to create green, healthy and safe homes for children and families living in Detroit and Wayne County....

For New Bridge To Canada Trump & Trudeau Want "Expeditious Completion"

When it comes to getting a second bridge linking the United States and Canada in Detroit built, it has been a long, drawn out process. Between multiple rounds of resistance in the courts and even at the ballot box from the billionaire owner of the Ambassador Bridge, Matty Maroun, as well as the process of acquiring all the land and doing the planning for the second span, the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been progressing in fits and starts with a seemingly indefinite construction start...

It seems hard to believe, but the cake is completely free of any animal byproducts. “At Avalon International Breads, diners c...

The letter, signed by State School Reform Officer Natasha Baker, went on to explain that children attending closed schools may be offered “the opportunity to attend a higher-performing school” and encouraged parents to use an attach...

Readers Sound Off On The Most Important Issues Facing Detroit In 2017: Education, Crime & Job Creation

In today’s digital world it’s relatively easy to see what’s popular. Every website has software that tells us how many page views a story received, how long in aggregate people spent on a video, all of that. But anyone living here knows that what is popular is not the whole story. Often the most impactful topics are not the most popular. We do enjoy writing stories of interest about the next noodle place or reminding you of an old favorite burger. But there is, obviously, so much more. We’...

After decades of demographic and economic decline, culminating in America’s largest municipal bankruptcy in 2013, many observers were ready to proclaim that the city of Detroit was dead. But over the past several years, following successful resolution of the bankruptcy and the emergence of new municipal leadership, views have changed. Now academics and the popular press are documenting Detroit’s recovery and resilience. But does this positive image of Detroit reflect reality? Will the recovery...

10 Coffee Shops In Detroit And What Makes Each One Special

It seems nowadays everyone is making lists of the bars, restaurants, and general points of interest throughout Detroit. Some are organized by the perceived opinions of the writer on their quality or “hipness,” others simply listed by geographic location, and still others are lazily just ordered alphabetically. These serve only as filler or poor substitution for actual content and useful information. So rather than word barf out a list of the coffee shops that I can name and I have been to...

I’d like to give prayers and blessings to Delores Bennett’s family, friends, and supporters after her passing on Tuesday February 7, 2017. Delores Bennett was a Wayne County Commissioner for years. But she will forever live on in the mind of most as the Godmother of the North End. Delores Bennett was one of my...
