Work Begins In Earnest On The Shinola Hotel In Downtown Detroit

The pace of change in the physical landscape of downtown Detroit is moving at breakneck pace. The latest news is that work on the Shinola Hotel has officially started today. Instead of a traditional “groundbreaking” putting shovels into the ground, a hole was made in a brick wall during the news conference. The boutique hotel, announced with much fanfare last September, will be located at the corner of Woodward and Grand River in downtown Detroit in buildings with some history, including one...

Should I-375 Become A Boulevard? Freeway Makes CNU's "Freeways Without Futures" List

Turning I-375 in downtown Detroit has popped up in the news again, thanks to a new list put out by the Congress for the New Urbanism of 10 “Freeways without Futures” for 2017. The spur was built in 1959 and now stands as a physical divide between the Central Business District and Lafayette Park neighborhoods. The project (along with the rest of the rebuild of Lafayette Park) meant the eradication of the Detroit’s historic Black Bottom community, as well as the culturally and commercially sig...

A New Name And Future For 9303 East Jefferson

The Colony and Fisher Arms apartments at 9303 East Jefferson in Detroit has had a troubled past. For instance, in November of 2013, more than 150 law enforcement officers from the Detroit Police Department, Michigan State Police, and the FBI raided the apartment building and arrested 32 residents. That’s after receiving about 600 calls for service at the building in that year. But on Friday, Mayor Mike Duggan as well as the developers were showing off a very different story. The new owners...

Has Macomb County Turned Off The News? British Paper Says So

Macomb County in Michigan has been the focus of a lot of media attention as of late because of their swing status being crucial for the election of President Donald Trump. That coverage has been uneven at best. The photographer and storyteller from the Humans of New York did a great job of telling personal stories from the area with compassion even if they may or may not have agreed, but The Guardian today paints Macomb County as a place that doesn’t read the news and doesn’t care to. With a...

Where Are The Detroit Schools That Face Possible Closure? Everywhere.

Detroiters are only now absorbing the reality of potentially losing 25 struggling schools and trying to figure out where as many as 12,000 displaced students would go if their school is shut down at the end of the school year. This map, which was shared at a meeting of educators and community leaders on Wednesday, shows Detroit schools by a state ranking that measures primarily test scores and graduation rates. Red dots represent schools that have been ranked in the bottom 5 percent for thre...

These 3 Neighborhoods Will Be The Hottest In Metro Detroit This Year, According To Redfin

In the last few years the city of Detroit has seen the beginnings of a real estate resurgence. Their predictions aren’t just for the city, but the region as a whole. I...

These priorities were apparently gathered from Governor’s offices across the country, who were asked to give 3-5 suggestions each. 25 Struggling Schools In Detroit Are Set To Close, But Nearby Options Aren't Much Better

Michigan education officials’ aggressive school closure plan faces a major challenge: It’s unlikely that most students displaced by closures will end up in substantially better schools. That’s because there are few schools in struggling cities like Detroit that have test scores significantly higher than the schools facing closure. The 38 schools — including 25 in Detroit — on the dreaded list have all spent at least three years in the bottom 5 percent on a state ranking that measures test sc...
