What to know and where to go in Metro Detroit

Our Top 10 Reader Favorite Posts Of 2016

What is the end of the year without top ten lists? We love writing lists. And it seems you love reading them. Spoiler alert: Three of our top ten posts of the year were lists, and speak to the fun nature of how Daily Detroit was founded — in the back of a bar, with the first version being built over a few $1 beer nights at Nancy Whiskey. Our entire team (most are taking a break until next week) wants to extend a giant thank you for 2016. Of course, thank you to all who attended our Daily Det...

Michigan Bans Bans On Plastic Bags

Yes, you read that right. Nationally, plastic bags have become a contentious issue, with Republicans (for the most part) getting to work to protect the single use plastic bag. Governor Mike Pence (now President Elect) signed a bill in Indiana prohibiting bans on plastic bags in March. Wisconsin and Idaho also in 2016 banned local government from banning plastic bags. They weren’t the first. Florida has had a ban on local bans since 2008, and in 2015 Arizona enacted one as well. However, Ca...

Detroit Police Chief Craig Issues Coney Challenge To Green Bay PD

There’s a lot of anticipation building for Sunday’s game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, and when there’s a rivalry with something on the line (playoffs, in the case of the Lions), often stakes get raised, especially among friends. It turns out both Detroit’s police chief James Craig and Green Bay’s Andrew Smith worked together at the 77th Street Division in South Central Los Angeles back in the 1990s. Craig, flanked by other officers and American Coney Island owner Grac...

Food insecurity is a real problem in Detroit and the region. According to a 2014 report, in the tri-county Detroit region, food insecurity rates in 2009 were 23.8 percent for Wayne County, 15.3 percent for Oakland County and 17.7 percent for Macomb County. Food insecurity means that people affected do not have reliable access to healthy, nutritious food due to poverty, lack of grocery options, or other reasons. Statewide in Michigan, 46 percent of children qualify for free or reduced lunch....

Follies: A Broadway Revue To Be Performed By The Detroit Actor's Theatre Company This January and February

When I was younger I always dreamed that I could be a Broadway star. Obviously that didn’t happen. I have two left feet, and the only singing I do in public is at karaoke. But my love of musicals and theatre has never wavered. Of course I love seeing the big musical productions that come to big venues the Fisher Theatre, but I also enjoy going to community theatre shows. They’re a great deal and a lot of fun. The Detroit Actor’s Theatre Company will be performing their fourth annual producti...

Motor City NYE Drop to be one hot party downtown this Saturday

I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m totally ready to say goodbye to 2016. I can’t think of a better way to do that than with a party. Meridian is hosting The Drop, Motor City NYE this year in Campus Martius and Cadillac Square. This is the seventh year that Detroit has had a ball drop in Campus Martius. “We’re expecting this year’s celebration to be bigger and better than ever,” said Jerrid Mooney, co-founder of Motor City NYE. “Because New Year’s Eve falls on a Saturday this year, it’s a gr...

Detroit Has Always Hustled Harder: Meet A Detroit Hustler From The 1800s

The terms “hustle” and “hustler” are big in culture today, especially here in Detroit. “Detroit Hustles Harder” is a popular shirt and slogan. People waking up and Snapchatting “Time to rise and grind” and talking about how hard they hustle or are hustlers. But hustler? As in someone who goes after their goals and works hard? That’s a very old term. Described in an 1891 book, “Detroit in History and Commerce” our hustler we’ll talk about here was described as “ … a young man — thirty six yea...

A Photo Look Backstage At Cirque du Soleil: OVO

On Thursday I had the chance to watch the practice of Cirque du Soleil: OVO before the Detroit premiere. We were also able to go on a tour behind the scenes. Let’s take a look! I love live performances, so I jumped at the chance to see all the cogs that make up a touring show. Even though the show started last night you still have a few chances to see the show this weekend. There are two shows left on Saturday, and the final show will be on Sunday afternoon. They have special hours for this...

WATCH: Six Special Minutes On The History Of Detroit's Beautiful Assumption Grotto

Assumption Grotto has always had a special place in my heart as it’s where some of my closest family is laid to rest, as well as in a neighborhood some of my east side family lived in. The Assumption Grotto houses the shrine of Our Lady of the Lourdes. The parish was founded in 1832 and is the second oldest in the city. So when I stumbled upon this video by the Detroit Mass Mob featuring Joe Fisher, the volunteer groundskeeper, it’s a must-share. I won’t add much in writing here as the vid...

There are budding artists in high schools all over Michigan just waiting to break out. This year many of them in grades 10-12 entered the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 29th annual Poster Contest to show off their talent. What a terrific job they did. There were 890 entries from 70 schools across our state and these young artists certainly captured the show in their work. Someday many of them may well be designing your vehicles. “The work and creativity displayed by these you...

The nation's first combination Applebee's and IHOP to open in downtown Detroit

It looks like downtown Detroit will be gaining another restaurant in 2017, and this one is an interesting blend of two well-known names. The Millender Center on Jefferson and Brush will be the new location for the first co-branded Applebee’s Grill and Bar and IHOP restaurant.   According to information provided by Team Schostak, construction on the space is expected to start in April pending approvals from the city and look for a grand opening in late 2017. Hopefully they will do a major u...

7 Handmade in Michigan Gifts as selected by Eric Gorges, host of TV’s A Craftsman’s Legacy

This holiday season many people I know do their shopping on an on-line giant or chain store. I admit I do, too. You get what you want, fast and you cross another item off the list. But, I make a living making things with my hands, so more often than not, I am enormously disappointed in the lack of quality, durability and workmanship of these mass produced gifts. Toys fall apart in a few days, clothing and goods wear out quickly and technology becomes disposable in no time at all. With that sai...

Menorah in the D aims to brings people of all faiths together on December 27

The menorah stands for light, wisdom and divine inspiration and the light of its candles is a reminder of past miracles. That message transcends all faiths. Menorah candles are lit in Jewish households ever year as part of the eight-day Chanukah celebration, which translates to “rededication.” There is no better time than now to rededicate our commitment to Detroit’s continued transformation – downtown and in the neighborhoods – as well as a personal rededication to perform wonders in our live...
