Park or wait in the way of the QLINE? You could face a $650 fee

It’s going to take a little while for people to get used to having a streetcar going up and down Woodward. Even though the tracks are in place, it’s commonplace to see delivery trucks, people standing waiting for people, and other traffic activity people are used to doing on a road that doesn’t have a streetcar. But it looks like people are going to have to learn fast. According to a statement released by M1-Rail, if you park in the way of the streetcar – even in testing phase – you’ll be faci...

Detroit Zoo gets a new eco-friendly parking lot, adding 215 spaces

Parking lots usually create a lot of water runoff that has to be then treated by sewage systems. However, the Detroit Zoo has built a new parking lot made out of “permeable pavement,” which reduces storm water runoff and filters pollutants. Permeable pavement allows for the natural absorption of water beneath the surface, prevents excess storm water from damaging sewer systems, and minimizes underground pollutants. This practice was first implemented at the Zoo in 2015 with the construction of...

New baby boutique Little High Flyers in Midtown aiming to take off

Sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time. On Thursday I needed to be in Midtown for the Treymore Apartment building ribbon cutting, but I was really early. I decided to take a few laps around the neighborhood to check out all of the new things going on down there. What should I see out of the corner of my eye as I made my way up Cass but a new store called Little High Flyers. The new store is sandwiched between Source Bookstore and Hugh. Immediately I knew I needed to come...

Buy a cutting board made from reclaimed Detroit wood and help COTS feed a homeless family

Need that special gift made FROM Detroit? Here’s a thought – a handcrafted, reclaimed wood charcuterie serving and sandwich board are created out of wood from Detroit homes. Each board is stamped with the address of the home where the wood was reclaimed. Boards sell for $50 and are soaked in mineral oils for 24 hours after final sanding and allowed to air dry for an additional 24 hours. A final, all-natural wax seals and protects each 7½ x 15 x ¾ board.  No two boards are alike. Best of al...

Vacant for more than 20 years, the Treymore finds new life as affordable housing

There’s a lot of talk on the high price end about Detroit real estate as of late, especially in the Midtown neighborhood. But here’s something different. The four-story Treymore building just went through a $7 million redevelopment project and now has 28 one and two bedroom apartments for low income occupants. The 1900s era building on Brainard had been abandoned for more than 20 years before Paradise Valley Investment Group (PVI) stepped up and bought the building for renovation. “Rest...

There’s a new playground coming for emerging artists to get together in Detroit

It’s sad but true. Detroit lacks a major infrastructure for the arts. Sure, there are established institutions such as the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Artists Market and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit: MOCAD. They are great, but some of the city’s emerging artists, designers and musicians wonder where they can come together for support, promotion and simply camaraderie? Many of them are young – in the 20s and 30s – and want to make a splash in Detroit, and they want Detroit...

If you’ve been driving down Woodward in greater downtown Detroit, you may have noticed that there are now platforms and partial shelters sticking out of various places. They look very modern, with an information screen and a glowing light bar. The stations will be 98-by-12 foot and made of glass and concrete. They will be Wi-Fi enabled, heated and equipped with se...

Sensory friendly Santa will be at area White Castle this Sunday

During the holidays often the first thing that parents think about is where to see Santa Claus. In fact, I still haven’t figured out where to take my two year old. However, for parents with a child on the autism spectrum the decision is tougher. Malls can be crowded and overwhelming, and depending on their child’s needs it could be hard to find a quiet place to meet the big guy. This is where White Castle has stepped in. Families who have children on the spectrum will have an opportunity t...

There's a new guide book to Detroit by none other than the Nain Rouge himself, and it's excellent

There is a new Detroit guide book now available for purchase, Things I Do In Detroit: A Guide Book To The Coolest Places By The Nain Rouge. This isn’t your run of the mill guide book; this one is from the perspective of our very own red gnome. Obviously the book really isn’t written by the Nain Rouge, but I can suspend my belief for a while. Dave Krieger is the author and photographer of the book. A native Detroiter, Krieger has been a well known photographer for over 30 years. Love him or h...
