Meet Aerial_Knight, behind "We Never Yield"

Have a watch: Today: We talk about a visit to the Shankar Distillery, making the Varchas brand, a new spot blending Indian and American whiskey traditions. Learn about their unique offerings, including a Reserve 102 bourbon whiskey and the cultural significance behind their eagle branding. Jer and Devon discuss his favorite twist on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, featuring me...
Crime and safety, blight and vacancy, housing affordability are the top 3 issues, say Detroiters
As long as we’ve done this show, growing Michigan, and getting it into gear to be competitive against the rest of the country has been a topic. Honestly, it sometimes feels like I'm screaming down into the void as someone who is usually pushing for things to be better. Because as much as we love our city, region and state, there's much to be proud of… There is work to do. There has been for years. After all, Michigan is second to last in the nation for attracting people from other states. Mix...
"If you want to watch, to listen, to read something that has value to you, be prepared to pay for it." - Matt Friedman
(now, let's think even bigger)
There's a bunch of new spots opening in Detroit ahead of the NFL Draft, and one of the latest - and capturing the most buzz - is Adelina on Woodward Avenue. Across from the massive Hudson's site tower and a block from Campus Martius Park, it's location is second to none. But also adding to the mix is celebrity chef Fabio Viviani, who you might know from Top Chef or his many other restaurants. In a special conversation in the restaurant, Jer sat down with Fabio and Chefs Marco Dalla Fontana and...
Black Tech Saturdays is making quite the splash in bridging digital divides and being a platform to lift up Detroit in technology. Plus, it’s a total vibe. Far different (in a good way) than what you’re used to for “tech events.” Joining me on the show is Alex and Johnnie Turnage, co-founders – as well as Ethan Lloyd, Social Media Manager for the city of Detroit and he runs the city of Detroit’s social media accounts that have been growing quickly and engaging residents. It’s cheesy to...
Four Daily Detroit contributors around one table? The dream is realized at the new studio in TechTown. Norris Howard, Shianne Nocerini, Devon O’Reilly and Jer talk three of today’s stories that impact Metro Detroit. 00:51 – There’s a hotel proposed for the top of the Michigan Central project in Corktown on the old train station. Is that the best use? Will it be a great way to show off the city? 06:32 – We wax nostalgic about Olga’s, who abruptly closed their Westland location after more...
Although a lot of attention is paid to buses and transit in the city of Detroit, the reality is the vast majority of people in Metro Detroit do not live within the city limits. Although some do, many of their trips to get around don’t involve the city at all. They’re served by SMART – The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation – and any conversation about transit and linking southeast Michigan together involves their work. In this conversation with Tiffany Gunter, Depu...
What does it take to run a bar and restaurant? When Owen Burke and his business partner Tony Piraino first ran a bar called Pulse in 2005, the building they were leasing got demolished by the city for future progress. So they changed concepts, got a hold of a historic building in Greektown, and opened Firebird Tavern in 2013. A decade in one concept is quite the accomplishment in their industry. And recently, they expanded with a second location in Troy, Michigan. In this honest con...
The first wireless electric charging road in the United States – where, with the right equipment, you can drive on it and charge while moving – has opened in Detroit’s Corktown. Using technology by Electreon and deployed at Michigan Central, it seems only appropriate for this first quarter mile to be here. Me and Norris Howard discuss the technology, the implications, the possibilities, the challenges and more in this single-topic episode of your Daily Detroit. We’re not sure if this w...
Our deep-dive conversation is with Brian Mulloy. He’s doing small-scale development in the city of Detroit through his Ballet Real Estate, but with a focus on building restoration and urban spaces. His transformation of a building at Bagley and Trumbull (and subsequent development of a property few thought could be built on it behind it) not only has caught attention for its looks but the amount of hassle he had to go through to get it done. So how can Detroit support smaller devel...
Woodward, Gratiot, Michigan Avenue, and M-59. When a bill to establish a regional transit authority in metro Detroit came before the Michigan Legislature four years ago, it named only those four regional corridors as the agency’s focus, prompting concerns by some – including ourselves – that the authority might overlook the pressing transit needs across our whole region. Thankfully, the draft Regional Master Transit Plan released by the RTA at a series of public meetings this month is so muc...

On Wednesday, July 20, at 9:00 p.m. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy will host the first Moonlight Yoga session of the summer at West RiverFront Park located at 1801 W. UPDATE: As of this morning (Saturday), the advisory has been lifted. Until further notice, according to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, there’s a boil water advisory in a large section of the city thanks to a large, 42-inch water transmission main break this morning, and some people have reported low water pressure in the area. The testing of the water samples will be completed by Saturday, so this advisory has the potential to go on for days. Per DWSD and the Great Lakes Water...
Today the Mike Ilitch School of Business at Wayne State University broke ground – a project at Woodward and Temple we told you about last week. However, the look of the building has been switched up pretty significantly. Gone are the columns and dome that reminds one of academia, and in its place is another glass facade that is going to be along Woodward avenue. Here’s what the old rendering looked like. Much more stately and traditional college-looking than above. In fact, so many of t...
If you’re near 12087 Klinger Street in Hamtramck, you’ll be met with one of the most colorful, unique, and unforgettable sites in Metro Detroit, Hamtramck Disneyland. This folk art installation was created by Dmytro Szylak, a Ukrainian immigrant to the area. Szylak spent 30 years working on building the assemblage sculpture on the two garages on his properties. In May 2015, Szylak passed away, and Hamtramck Disneyland was in danger of being torn down. Purchased by Hatch Art, a local non-profit...
Rolling up Ralston off of Woodward in the passenger seat Friday night, there was a sense of anticipation, possibly enhanced by a couple of whiskey drinks from the previous stop. Would we see the red light in the distance? The familiar “BAR” that has been an icon of Detroit’s dive bar culture for years? After all, the week before, even though it was said the place was going to be open, there was a hand-written note in the door saying that they’d be open the 15th. We had heard there were liquo...
With construction on the new Little Caesars Arena progressing smoothly, the Red Wings will have a new home for their 2017-2018 season. Little Caesars Arena will be the Red Wings’ third home since their creation, and it will likely play a large part in Detroit’s ever-developing identity. But hockey fans and Detroiters still hold much love and nostalgia for the past – and when it comes to old hockey barns, The Detroit Olympia was a beloved gem and so let’s take a look back while we’re building t...
Back in October there was an announcement about a new business school building for the Mike Ilitch School of Business – well, on Wednesday, the actual work is getting underway. To be located at the corner of Temple and Woodward, right next to the new Little Caesars Arena, the school of business. The $50 million complex, according to Wayne State, “will serve more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students, provide new flexible teaching, research, office and community spaces for students and...
Back in 1965, Viola Liuzzo left her home, husband and five children in Detroit and headed Alabama to help Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference register African-American voters in Selma. She helped by driving supporters between Selma and Montgomery so they could participate in the freedom march from Selma to Montgomery. On March 21, she and another civil rights worker, Leroy Moton, an African-American teenager, were driving back to Selma on Highway 80. Another car...
It’s summer, so the constant churn of road construction is part of the Michigan experience. There’s a pair of one-lane situations you should know about for your weekend travels. Northbound I-75 at I-696 In our inboxes this morning word that Northbound I-75 will be going down to one lane between I-696 and 12 Mile near the Royal Oak and Madison Heights border. Although that isn’t a huge distance, any time you take the freeway down to one lane there’s the large potential for traffic delays....
It’s summer, so the constant churn of road construction is part of the Michigan experience. Just got word in our inboxes this morning that Northbound I-75 will be going down to one lane between I-696 and 12 Mile near the Royal Oak and Madison Heights border. Although that isn’t a huge distance, any time you take the freeway down to one lane there’s the large potential for traffic delays. They’re adding materials to increase the tire grip of the road to the area of northbound I-75 at Gardenia...
There is a flurry of speculation happening today about the possibility of Target opening a store in Midtown, specifically at Mack and Woodward along the under-construction QLine (a.k.a. M1-Rail). The Detroit Free Press was the first to get the ball rolling on the story that their sources say a mixed use development is in the works at the corner of Mack and Woodward while at the International Conference of Shopping Centers at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. While Target had be...
Everything old is new again – and the Capitol Park section of downtown, that was in recent memory served in part as a DDOT bus turnaround, is in the middle of a full-on investment binge. The latest news is La Lanterna, originally established in 1956 in Capitol Park in what is now the Malcomson building will reopen at 1214 Griswold, a building otherwise known as The Albert. The new 2,000 square foot restaurant will be in the historic Capitol Park district, a district so named because at one t...
Cabela’s announced today it will expand its presence in the Detroit market by bringing a 90,000 square foot store to Chesterfield Township in 2017. Construction is expected to begin this year and Cabela’s anticipates a 2017 opening. Located about 30 miles northeast of Detroit, the store will be located near the intersection of Hall Road and Interstate 94, near Super Walmart and Menards. “Chesterfield Township and the surrounding area offer remarkable opportunities for outdoor recreation, and...
Detroit’s casino revenue is basically flat for the year so far. Per the state of Michigan, aggregate revenue for the three Detroit casinos fell 0.2 percent during the second quarter of 2016 compared with last year’s second quarter, but year-to-date revenue is up a fractional 0.04 percent from the same period in 2015. For the month ended June 30, the casinos’ aggregate revenue was down by 1.2 percent when compared with June 2015 results and fell 8.4 percent below May revenue. 2nd Quarte...
For many people, Detroit is synonymous with the automobile. The city’s claim to fame and American icon status was through its impressive automobile factories that helped mobilize the country. However, despite Detroit’s heritage as the auto capital of the world, it’s not a great place for drivers. Actually, it came in second to last in WalletHub’s rankings of America’s best and worst cities for driving. WalletHub looked at 100 American cities in its report, and Detroit came in 99 overall. If...
There is a common theme for the events this weekend and that is music. Music has a way of bringing people from different backgrounds together. It is a universal language. The other common theme is that most of these events are family friendly. So pack up the kids and spend some time getting to know your neighbors. Crash Detroit – Roosevelt Park This is the third year that the Detroit Party Marching Band has put together this fun music fill weekend. Crash Detroit is a two-day party that show...
Thanks to a law passed recently and signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder in June, Michigan State Police are soon going to be selecting five Michigan counties for roadside drug testing. With a cotton swab drug test and a healthy dose of trained on-the-spot judgement, officers will determine whether or not a driver is under the influence of marijuana or cocaine as part of a 12-step evaluation. “The test drug recognition experts do are everything from taking a blood pressure, looking at your...
