The other common theme is that most of these events are family friendly. So pack up the kids and spend some time getting to know your neighbors. With a cotton swab drug test and a healthy dose of trained on-the-spot judgement, officers will determine whether or not a driver is under the influence of marijuana or cocaine as part of a 12-step evaluation. “The test drug recognition experts do are everything from taking a blood pressure, looking at your...

Speak Your Mind At The Truth Booth July 31-Aug 13

Have an opinion that you’re scared to speak? Do you see something happening in your community that you’d like to address without fear of judgment? The Truth Booth is a great place to do just that. FAIL: Watch As A Drone Crashes Into The Steeple Of St. Florian In Hamtramck

Make sure your drone has signal when you’re flying it high near a church, or it could meet an untimely end. This drone bit it in an epic way, according to the Youtuber alexandr pugachov causing $400 of damage to his drone and GoPro Black 4 camera on it after it lost signal and went into “go home” mode. Although the video says downtown Detroit you can see in the very beginning of the short, less-than-a-minute video the towers of the Rencen in the distance and since we’re so very close the unm...

Ruin Porn? Maybe In Europe, But Not In The 313

As a Black person, and lifelong Detroit resident my understanding of the world is heavily influenced by race and process. This relates to the concept, term, and idea of ‘Ruin Porn.’ I first heard the term used in a discussion 4 years ago. I was sharing ideas about my soon to be released album ‘If Detroit were Heaven,’ and conceptually how I saw photography being coupled with the music to provide a better understanding of the album’s premise. As the art student from Center for Creative Studies...

WATCH: Detroit TV Reporter Just Can't Handle The Giant Slide

Ahh, the hilarious dangers of Sunday morning live television. There are three words we’re not sure we’d ever see together, “Uncle Sam Jam,” but it’s a real thing, and WDIV reporter Nick Monacelli did a live shot from the event in Woodhaven on a giant, rainbow-colored slide. However, the giant slide gets the last laugh – as not only does Monacelli go at basically warp speed, he hits the fence with his head. He’s ok – “And yes, that was my head against the metal gate at the end, but Motrin i...

The Other Detroit River Tunnel No One’s Told You About

How many Detroit River tunnels connect Detroit and Canada? If you said one, you’re wrong. In addition to the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, there’s the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel, the lesser-known of the two. However, the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel is the older tunnel, and it handles freight train traffic. Construction on the Michigan Central Railway Tunnel began in October 1906, and the tunnel opened for trains in July 1910, 20 years before the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel opened. Both tunne...

A Piece Of Detroit's History From The 1870s Burned Last Weekend

Over the Fourth of July weekend, a piece of Detroit history burned. A piece that a dedicated group of neighbors was trying to save. On the evening of Sunday, July 3 the Nortown Community Development Corporation got a call that there was a fire at the Philetus W. Norris House at 17815 Mount Elliot in Detroit. It was heartbreaking for the group, as years of hard work and passion went up in flames for the people who were involved with trying to renovate historic the house. “I’m heartbroken, and...
