Over a quarter of millennials in Detroit – 26.1 percent – live with their moms, and living with mom is something that’s happening across the country, according to Zillow. In the U.S., Zillow estimates that 21 percent of 24-34 year olds live with their moms, and that number has increased since 2005, when just 13 percent of young people lived at home. Why? The Estate Sale of the Century will now be held on Thursday, May 19th through Saturday, May 21st from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. We don’t often write about the farther reaches of Macomb County around here – we did include Frank’s Eastside Tavern as one of the basement bars you have to check out – but considering there are more than 3,000 people interested in this “Estate Sale Of The Century,” and the...

What do automotive engineering and making children’s crafts have in common? Ingenuity, creativity, and problem-solving, for starters. Bloomfield Hills resident Sheila Wright has all three qualities, so it’s not quite so hard to see how she made the leap from automotive engineer to founder of Ann Williams Group, the company behind successful children’s craft kits like Loopdeloom and Loopdedoo. Sheila explains, “As a child I used to daydream about businesses I would like to start. I had a few...

Metro Detroit’s 20 Largest School Districts, Ranked by Student Attainment

Education is important, but it’s very clear that not all students are educated equally. The New York Times published an article based on a study that looked at the correlation between money race, and student success. The results were fascinating and disheartening. But what does that mean locally? Using the Stanford Center For Education Policy Analysis study data, we applied the findings to Metro Detroit’s 20 largest school districts (using the tri-county area as definition this time) to see ho...

An Auto Engineer Returns to Work After 24 Years Raising Children

Stepping out of the workforce for two decades is enough to kill any career in technology or engineering. After spending 24 years out raising her four children and teaching at a home-schooling co-op, 54-year-old Wendy MacLennan scaled a Mount Everest-like learning curve to make a comeback as an automotive engineer....

Express Bus Service Plans For Gratiot, Woodward: RTA To Hold Open House Workshops, Public Hearings

One of the things the RTA does, beyond the big plan for transit we’ve talked about, is help coordinate the existing suburban and city systems of SMART and DDOT. Two areas that have been identified as high demand for bus service, where more express service down the roads could make an impact, is the Woodward and the Gratiot corridors. The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) will be hosting several opportunities for public input to discuss express service along Woodward and Gratiot Avenues with l...

When you think symphony, maybe you think top hats, tails, suits, and ladies in their finest. LOOK: Virtual Reality Technology Is Coming To Job Training

The first thing that I think of when I hear virtual reality is the Aerosmith video Amazing. If you grew up in the 1990’s you know the one I’m talking about. It’s the one where Alicia Sliverstone and Jason London are in the desert on the motorcycle, except the whole thing is the virtual world. Jason London has a desk full computer monitors, electronics, and a giant headset in order to create this fake world. Long story short, the technology for virtual reality has become much more refined. The...

We Will Be Back To Work Tomorrow, But This Is Far From A Win

Today, Transition Manager Judge Steven Rhodes provided a signed document stating DPS teachers will be paid for services rendered. We will all be back to work tomorrow. However, as this was happening, the Republican majority House of Representatives were busy voting down a proposed forensic audit, and voting down the proposal to return teachers the $10,000 in TIP money they each “loaned” the district out of their checks in 2009 (not to mention restoring the 10% pay cuts that were taken on top...
