Anti-semitic flyers were found taped to a church door on Sunday morning. The Ferndale First United Methodist Church on Woodward found the fliers that include caricatures of Jewish men. Detroit Public School District Opens With Water Coolers & Bottles Instead Of Drinking Fountains

Students started the first day of classes in the Detroit Public Schools Community District with water coolers and bottled water in lieu of drinking fountains. Superintendent Nikolai Vitti ordered drinking water shut off across the district last week after testing found elevated levels of lead or copper in 16 of 24 school buildings and after 18 were given bottled water after an earlier round of testing. Motorless City Bicycle Company says it plans to permanently close its doors at the end of September after four seasons in business in Eastern Market. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was scheduled to be laid to rest Friday. A little piece of news out of the funeral is that Chene Park is to be renamed in her honor. At the service at Greater Grace Temple, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said that he and members of the City Council had agreed to change the name of Chene Park to Aretha Franklin Park. Lockout Between Union, Roadbuilders Could Mean More Headaches

Headaches for drivers due to road projects in Michigan could go on longer, thanks to a dispute between road construction companies and one union. The Detroit News reports a number of projects could be delayed due to a lockout by companies that are members of the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association. Wednesday marked the grand opening of PatchWork Collective, a new coworking space just outside of downtown Ferndale. If you could imagine one of metro Detroit’s three major counties without bus service… well, it almost happened. Macomb County voters narrowly approved a ballot measure funding SMART – the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation – in August.
