Detroit’s schools seem to be constantly in flux, and keeping up with it is a lot of work. Thankfully, Erin Einhorn and Julie Topping do that work for Chalkbeat Detroit (and disclosure, we often syndicate their work, with permission, on our site).
Chalkbeat is a national nonprofit organization with bureaus in Colorado, Detroit, Indiana, New York, and Tennessee. It focuses on efforts to improve schools for all children, especially those who have historically lacked access to a quality education.
Locally, the work is shouldered by Erin Einhorn and Julie Topping, both reporting veterans.
Erin Einhorn is an award-winning journalist and author. She’s written for The Atlantic, The Nation and Time and has contributed to the public radio program This American Life. Before moving to Detroit in 2014, she was the Deputy Managing Editor for politics at the New York Daily News where she previously served as City Hall Bureau Chief and covered the nation’s largest public school system. She’s also worked for Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News. Einhorn is the author of the 2008 memoir The Pages In Between: A Holocaust Legacy of Two Families, One Home, which was published by Simon & Schuster.
Julie Topping is editor of Chalkbeat’s Indiana and Detroit bureaus. She formerly worked at the Detroit Free Press, where she supervised operations of sports, features, entertainment, education, health and enterprise reporting.
