It looks like it could be one very good evening tonight at The Belt, the alley in downtown Detroit by the “Z” garage.

The Library Street Collective, who has hosted exhibitions by notable artists like Shepherd Fairey, Hense, as well as Revok & Pose, is opening up “Public Matter” by Futura tonight from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., free and open to the public.

Futura, real name Leonard McGurr, is from New York but is inspired by Detroit.

“Futura is a pseudonym for the Futura car, and here I am, 46 years later,” he said.

The Lincoln Futura, if you didn’t know, was the basis for the Batmobile in the 50s era TV show.

The gallery is at 1265 Library Street in Detroit, and the party will extend through the alley to drink purveyors The Skip and Standby, as well as have food trucks El Guapo, Delectabowl and Treat Dreams.

But that’s not all. The Detroit Party Marching band is apparently going to make an appearance at some point in the night, and according to the Facebook event of the Library Street Collective, Grammy-award winning artist Lupe Fiasco will DJing a set with DJ Sky Gellatly.

Lupe has actually been an assistant to the artist exhibiting, Futura and is a painter himself under his legal name, Wasalu Jaco.

Earlier this week, the artist, Futura, installed four outdoor murals to check out in the belt to honor Detroit’s sports teams, as well as worked with kids from the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences to creatively paint shoes with his help and guidance.
