A much awaited new link to Canada, the Gordie Howe Bridge, won’t be complete until at least 2023.
That’s according to a report in the Windsor Star.
The report outlines some key reasons for delay, including the new community benefits requirements with the city of Detroit and the the addition of separated pedestrian and bike lanes.
These items were not in the original specifications.
Instead of bids being due this fall of this year, the submission date has been pushed off until summer of next year with a winner not being selected until the end of 2018.
The project is expected to take 42 months to complete – once it gets started.
When first proposed, the new bridge was going to be ready in 2020. The new bridge is seen by many local government, business and union leaders as a vital addition to the local economy.
The Ambassador Bridge, operational since 1929, carries 25 percent of all merchandise trade between the United States and Canada.
