Earlier this month I had the opportunity to check out a new facial bar in Royal Oak called Skinphorea.
Picture a spa where you go for facials. Are you picturing the day spa where you are dressed in a robe? Where you can spend all day there getting all sorts of things done to your body? Take that image and toss it out. Just throw it out the window.
Skinphorea is a new take on your average spa that offers facials. They specialize in express facials and waxing. Each facial is performed at a “bar.”
This is great for busy people who could might only have time on their lunch break to get a facial. Each facial is roughly 30 minutes.
The basic facial is $49. You can add on extra treatments which are called “shots” for $10 each. They do offer top shelf treatments that cost more than the base facial price.
They also offer a VIP package that costs $45 a month. The benefits of becoming a VIP is that you get a facial cocktail, a free shot, 10% off any other products or services, and a free waxing during your birth month.
Their options include chemical peels, enzyme peels, LED light therapy, microdermabrasion and oxygen facials.
When co-owners Jessica Hayes-Stallings and Shareese Shorter decided to open Skinphorea they talked about what would make them different. The price of the facials was one thing. They wanted to keep the cost down, so that way people could take care of their skin more often.
“Everywhere you go the price of facials are $75 or $80. You can only get them once every couple months, or twice a year,” said Hayes-Stallings. “We kept it at $49 so people could really see a change in their skin. They can come more often, and treat themselves more.”
They also wanted to educate the people who sit in the chairs during their facial. Each esthetician will give you a thorough consultation about your skin type, and what your problem areas are. They also walk you through the process and the different benefits to the products being used.
Hayes-Stallings is a former financial credit counselor who decided to go to beauty school to become an esthetician. After working for years as a manager of the spa at Motor City Casino and Massage Green she decided to take a leap of faith and open her own spa.
Shorter is in charge of the financial aspect of the spa. Her background is in mortgage banking and financial credit counselor.
While I was at the opening party, they offered to give me an express facial. I jumped at the opportunity, because in all honesty my skin has been crazy since having a child almost two years ago.
I have always been intimidated by facials. I’m not sure why, maybe it is the price that scared me from getting one done. Or the fact that I just don’t have the time to get one done.
At the end of my facial, my skin looked and felt incredibly refreshed.
The one downside to some I can see for Skinphorea is that it is located in downtown Royal Oak. And although it is on Washington Boulevard you could still have a hard time finding parking. Be sure to bring your extra change for the meters.
Hours: Sunday: 12:00 PM- 5:00 PM, Monday and Tuesday: Closed, Wednesday through Friday: 10:00 AM-7:00 PM, Saturday: 10:00 AM-6:00 PM
