City Of Detroit Sees The Lowest Unemployment Rate In 16 Years

Jobs are one of the most important issues when it comes to Detroit’s recovery, and it has been a topic up here at the Mackinac Policy Conference. The city of Detroit in April had the lowest unemployment rate since May of 2001, according preliminary information shared by the Mayor’s office from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The graph above tracks the year over year unemployment rate in April. The city’s rate of 8.4 percent is higher than the rest of Michigan at 4.7 percent, and the Detroit...

City Of Detroit Reports Budget Surplus

It wasn’t that long ago that the city of Detroit went through a historic bankruptcy. Now, for a second year in a row, Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration is reporting a deficit-free budget. This is important for two reasons. It means there are dollars to make improvements (we’ll get into what the Mayor has in mind in a moment), and it’s one more step toward exiting active oversight by the Detroit Financial Review Commission a restriction imposed under terms of the 2014 bankruptcy. One of a nu...

Detroit Continues To Lose Population According To New Census Data

Most of the nation is gaining population but the city of Detroit continues to lag and lose people, according to new annual estimates released today from the U.S. Census Bureau. The city lost 3,541 people from 2015 to 2016, or about a half of a percent. This is similar to the decline last year of 3,573. Nationally, the year over year growth rate averaged 0.7 percent. If Detroit was keeping pace with the nation, it should have had a population gain of 4,734. Over six years, Detroit has lo...

‘TechHire Bootcamp’ Launches 10 Week Program To Train Detroit Residents To Be Software Developers

One of the gaps in Detroit’s comeback is the skills gap, especially when it comes to residents and the increase of new technology jobs in the city. Although many of the new jobs in the city require a degree or technical training, just 13.1 percent of Detroit residents have a college degree. To help bridge this, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Grand Circus announced a new 10-week program that will provide training and mentorship for Detroit residents interested in becoming entry-level developer...

Ever Wanted To Turn An Old School In Detroit Into Housing? Here's Your Chance (PICS)

The idea of turning an old school into something else is a bar conversation many dreamers and developers have had, but the chances to do it with a building that isn’t too far gone are few and far between. Today, Daily Detroit had the chance to check out the old Transfiguration School Building that opened in 1926 in Detroit’s Banglatown neighborhood. If you’re not familiar with Banglatown, think up Mound Road, and just north of Hamtramck. It’s a neighborhood that has different demographics th...

City of Detroit Launches Online Demolition Tracker

Detroiters can now see Detroit’s demolished and soon-to-be demolished houses online with the city’s new Demolition Tracker map. This is especially exciting news for Detroiters who live near blighted homes. No longer will they be left to wonder if the house next door will ever come down. The map shows houses that scheduled to be demolished up to 90 days in advance. The online map will be updated constantly as new houses are demolished and contracted for demolition. The Demolition Tracker list...

Detroit’s Blight Removal Program Receives Additional $42 Million

The City of Detroit’s blight removal program is now able to expand into more neighborhoods as a result of an extra $42 million in funding approved by the U.S. Treasury and Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA). The city has been allocated a total of $170 million in federal blight removal, including this most recent round of funding. Detroit has so far used the funds to demolish more than 8,600 vacant buildings since January 2014. This year, the city plans to demolish 5,000 vacan...

Opportunity Fair Designed To Connect Minority Contractors to Projects

The city’s blight removal program, already the largest in the nation, is going to expand by at least 50 percent over the next two years. Additionally, several neighborhood-focused programs have resulted in a rise in home rehabilitation across Detroit. But that increase in the blight removal program and home rehab projects has created a shortage of available demolition and home repair contractors. To help meet this need, Mayor Mike Duggan, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and leaders of Detroit’s faith-...

Ford Fireworks To Be Longer And More Colorful This Year

While Fourth of July fireworks may be one of oldest American traditions, Detroit’s Parade Company always has something new up its proverbial sleeve. This year, the theme of “Colors of Love” has a special meaning because the fireworks will have a new hue added to the mix, said Tony Michaels, president and CEO of The Parade Company. He refused to reveal the color ahead of time, saying the surprise had to wait until the night of June 22. For Michaels and the rest of The Parade Company team, the...
