One of the neat places you find in your travels around Detroit is the Matrix Theatre. For more than a quarter century, the theatre that’s on Bagley Street has provided professional and educational theatre opportunities for children and adults in isolated or challenged communities to become creators, producers, and audience of engaging theatre productions. It’s really a magical little place. However, on the night of August 8/morning of August 9, the theatre had the following items stolen, t...

Detroit’s luxury goods manufacturing is about to go to another price level. Meet The Man Who Shaped The Detroit River

We all want to leave our mark in this world. For some, it’s through academic pursuits. For others, it’s through art or good deeds. For William Livingstone, it was the creation of a critical channel in the Detroit River that would help speed shipping along the Great Lakes. William Livingstone was born in Dundas, Ontario on January 21, 1844. When he was five years old, his family moved to Detroit. In 1865, Livingstone opened his own business with help from his father. Livingstone & Company sta...

From Bustling Factory To Abandoned Eyesore: The Story Of The Old AMC Headquarters In Detroit

The American Motors Corporation’s former headquarters at 14250 Plymouth Road is in limbo now. The property’s ownership will likely go to the Wayne County Land Bank before the end of the year. County officials have considered potential redevelopment options, but the solution they continue to return to is demolition. The building didn’t always stand desolate, ravaged, and silent. It was designed by Amedeo Leoni and built in 1927 as a new factory and administration building for the Kelvinator Cor...

Editor’s Note: The Trump speech on Monday has been moved from the Renaissance Center to Cobo Center.  Donald Trump (and his presidential campaign adversary Hillary Clinton) are locked in what could be arguably the most divisive presidential race in a long time. A Facebook event has popped up from a group called Cockroach Watch – and for a shor...

The Story Of The Davison, America’s First Urban Freeway

While freeways are pretty standard in American cities now, it wasn’t always that way. Instead of the ability to potentially go up to 70 miles an hour like on today’s highways, motorists had to use regular city streets to cross town. That was especially the case for motorists who wanted to cross Highland Park and enter Detroit. Everyone piled onto Davison Avenue, the only large street that ran through Highland Park and connected to Detroit running roughly east to west. The avenue and freeway wa...

More plaudits and praise for a popular pie shop. Well, that sweat equity is turning into sweet success. The shop that opened last year has been nominated by Bon Appetit as one of the top 50 best new restaurants in America, with the announcemen...
