5 Very Real Reasons Many Detroit Residents Aren’t Feeling The City's Comeback

Detroit’s resurgence is an incredible story. Hopefully, we can make sure everyone plays a part in it. There has been momentous progress, especially in the decade since the Superbowl came to town, but outside of signature developments and some truly impressive projects, most of the city hasn’t felt the comeback. A recent J.P. Morgan Chase study outlined the challenges, but frankly, it’s TL;DR (too long, didn’t read) for most folks. So we dived in and brought out the highlights. Here are fiv...

When you talk about media and Detroit, no longer can you just speak about what’s broadcast traditionally or print. The internet is a thing now, and it’s not going away. One of the vids that caught our eye this week was a tour of Detroit by none other than Mr. Foamer Simpson (a.k.a. Foamie) who has a passionate national following around style and culture. The New York native is not only is he a leading sneaker connoisseur, he also has a line of products including a “Grizzly Beard” conditioner....

Detroit's Iridescence Named One Of America's 100 Most Romantic Restaurants

If you’re looking for a romantic night out, the place to go, at least according to a new list released by OpenTable, is Motor City Casino’s Iridescence. It sits 16 stories high atop the automotive-inspired casino and hotel, with stunning views of the city as it’s just a little outside of downtown, bordering North Corktown. It is rated as a AAA’s 4-Diamond establishment, which mean that it has: “Leading-edge cuisine of the finest ingredients, uniquely prepared by an acclaimed chef, served by...

One Of Detroit's Worst School Buildings Is Down The Street From A $365,085 Home Listing

Just yesterday we received a generic email about a newly redone property on Mack Avenue, listing at $365,085 for a 1,281 square feet 3-bedroom place. It even uses the superlative “magnificence.” And there’s no doubt, the place looks nice. But the address – 248 Mack – rang a bell, because there has been a lot of coverage of the problems happening at Spain Elementary in Midtown. That’s because Spain Elementary, a Detroit Public School, is basically across the street. We’ll get back to why t...

WATCH: The New Eminem/Obama Mashup By The Detroit Pistons Is On Fire

Some might have thought it crazy when the folks from the website Funny or Die embedded their marketing team into the Detroit Pistons late last year. But the partnership has produced some awesome videos. The latest is a mashup of Eminem’s music and the words of President Barack Obama for “Forgot About Dre?” The “Dre” is Detroit’s Andre Drummond in this case, currently sitting fourth in the All Star voting. The partnership promised a “a creative way to deliver exciting new media content that t...

10 Things White People Like In Detroit

I spent my twenties working and partying in downtown Detroit. This was before Dan Gilbert came to town and made parts of it all fancy-schmancy with “placemaking initiatives” that “leverage the assets.” I’d drink well specials at The Well, talking with my friends about what should be done to get the city out of its current funk while I learned how real life worked and where I might fit in. My days of staying out all night running around the streets of Detroit are over. I’ll let the next gener...

One of the fun things about the Internet is finding things that give you a window that lets you see in on the past. One of those windows are postcards. These samples are from the Detroit Publishing Company and are, according to the New York Public Library, now public domain. Digitized just last year, there’s a plethora of great images from Detroit that we’re going to share in the coming weeks. Belle Isle is one of Detroit’s jewels. Whether it’s kayaking around it, enjoying the canals in it,...

Jack White To Release Live Tracks Recorded In Detroit From The 90s

Around the corner and down the way from the Cass Corridor-ish Daily Detroit blogquarters is a building with a unique facade. It has a triangular bit over the door, and if walls could talk, it would have decades of stories. I’m talking about a bar that is no more – it is one that probably few have ever heard of, but was important in the development of the Detroit music scene. The Gold Dollar. Let’s allow “Music USA: A Rough Guide” to lay out the description of the most modern incarnation, l...

One of Detroit’s most successful products based on the riverfront is getting a serious makeover. Atwater Brewery, who’s been making craft beer for nearly 20 years, will soon take on a fresh new look complete with three new beers and artistic new labels for their entire collection. The company’s revamped slogan and image is “Atwater Brewery. Born in Detroit. Raised Everywhere.” “We’ve been all about Detroit since we brewed our first German-styled lagers 18 years ago and said we wanted to ‘b...

Study Says Millenials Can Buy A Lot More House In Detroit Than In Other Major Cities

Apparently, Millennials are buying fewer homes than almost any other generation in history. While some might assume the reason is that we’re just too busy trying afford authentic pour-over coffees and snug fitting beanies, stocking up on vinyl, and of course managing the perfect balance between office workdays and craft cocktail filled weekend to ever think about silly things like setting, let alone reaching long term financial goals, or even more absurd, buying a home. Believe it or not, th...

Alpaca Ranch Could Come To Belle Isle, Put Abandoned Golf Course Back To Use

At first, it’s easy to brush the idea of an Alpaca Ranch on Belle Isle off as completely absurd. While the thought of such a move may seem strange, a Detroit couple believes that this is one new idea that deserves a chance. Detroiter David Shock, the creator of the idea of “Alpaca Land Detroit,” thinks Detroit needs more cute. The concept was a response to the family’s personal love of Detroit and alpacas. Shock is no stranger to rehab projects. He and his wife recently purchased an old fact...

WATCH: New Batman vs Superman trailer features shots of Detroit, Michigan State

Last night, the world got its first glimpse of the new Batman vs Superman film, which will be released in theaters on March 25th, 2016. As you may recall, a good chunk of the filming was done in the city proper and surrounding areas, and the trailer features a couple moments that are unmistakably Detroit. The most noticeable of the bunch comes in at about 2 minutes and 20 seconds when one of the city’s most recognizable land marks, Michigan Central Station, serves as the backdrop when the fi...

Low gas prices are one more thing to be thankful for this holiday

There’s some good news for the 67% of folks who will travel 200 miles or more for Thanksgiving this year. According to a report from gasbuddy.com, gas prices on Thanksgiving will drop to their lowest point since 2004, to an absurd $1.99 per gallon. At this time last year, the price was $2.81 per gallon. The same report states that nearly 60% of U.S. gas stations are currently selling gas for less than $2 per gallon, and prices are still falling in many parts of the country. The lowest pric...
