Don’t get greedy, though – the cheaper the spot, the more quickly it will be swooped up by patrons. Girls Rock Detroit Inspires A New Generation of Artists

When you consider the deep and rich musical history of Detroit, it’s amazing to think what the next generation of Detroit musicians might contribute to the world. However, with school music and arts programs on the chopping block across the state many young people may never have the chance to pick up an instrument, or realize the value of harnessing the art form as a means of self-expression, or even a career path. One local organization is on a mission to make sure that young women in th...

Watch The Rise And Fall Of Downtown With A Series Of Maps Starting In 1854

Up until 2011, things weren’t looking too hot for downtown Detroit. Even then, if you look at development now vs. how dense the building used to be, the difference is astonishing. This video uses a series of maps to highlight the fact that the center of the city started out quite dense, like you would expect big cities to be – then through a series of demolitions, reconfigurations, and of course, the decimation the freeways caused – turned into the downtown that although buildings are starting...

Did You Know That Detroit Has Its Own Rare Gem?

Well, believe it or not, this is real. It’s called Fordite, or Detroit agate. The beautiful “rocks” are actually chunks of old, over sprayed automobile paint that were hardened over time by the large ovens formerly used to cure freshly painted cars. Although Fordite been referred to anthropogenic mineral because it is originated by human activity, minerals by definition are naturally occurring. Whatever your scientific definition, these are still really cool. We’re going to call it a g...

Detroit Success Story Floyd Frames Out Their Future, Moves Beyond Just Legs

Amid the sea of new business opening around town, it’s hard to say which will stand the test of time and become staples in the community. However, one company that appears to be on the path to sustained success is Floyd – a furniture company born out of the frustration of moving from place to place and constantly leaving behind cheaply-made furniture, only to have to restock new destinations with more of the same. Initially launched on the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform, the company ha...

Detroit Ranks As Most Dangerous City In The US For Third Straight Year

Some not so good news for our fair city this morning, and a reminder that although there is progress in some areas there is also a lot of work that needs to be done. According to a recent ranking by lawstreemedia.com, for the third year in a row Detroit is number one among the most dangerous cities in the U.S. with a population of more than 200,000. Law Street’s Crime Team uses the FBI’s four major violent crime categories–murders, aggravated assaults, robberies, and forcible rapes–to create...

Detroit Is About To Get Some Pure Michigan Love

The City of Detroit’s revival has seen plenty of press, but this spring, it secures another vote of confidence, this time from the state level. The much loved Pure Michigan campaigns that highlight the near infinite wonders of the glove, will give a nod to post-bankruptcy Detroit in an effort to shift perceptions of the city from being in transition to a proper tourist destination. A far cry from the typical pure Michigan ads, which focus on the state’s natural beauty, this campaign will sho...

Detroit's Spirits Are On The Rise With New Homegrown Rye

Spirits in Detroit are on the rise. Distilled spirits, that is. You might not know that Detroit has a long history making liquor. At its peak, the distillation industry was once second only to the auto industry in Detroit, but faced its demise with the onset of Prohibition in 1917. For all the talk about craft beer in this state as of late, over the last several years Michigan has solidified its reputation as major player in the craft beer industry. In fact, Michigan now ranks sixth in brewe...

How Would Michigan Fare In A Zombie Apocalypse?

I saw The Walking Dead for the first time since season one this Sunday. Watching in horror as a beloved character (possibly) had his intestines ripped out and ingested by a horde of decrepit zombies, I got to thinking – “If this went down in Detroit, how would I, and the rest of the population, fare in a post virus, zombie ridden world?” Luckily I wasn’t the only one seeking an answer to this morbid yet inevitable question. CareerBuilder with the help of Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. (...

RecoveryPark Leverages Urban Agriculture To Combat Blight And Change Lives

One of the most common and persistent narratives heard in Detroit’s revitalization efforts, is the focus on the Downtown Business District, Midtown, and the soon to be District area near Cass park, has turned a blind eye to the significant challenges of the surrounding neighborhoods. However, it seems that the powers that be are beginning to look beyond those borders and into the neighborhoods. On Monday, Mayor Mike Duggan and Councilwoman Mary Sheffield joined with RecoveryPark CEO Gary Woz...
