There Aren't Two Detroits. But There Are Two Metro Detroits.

Over the past few years we’ve noticed that there is a severe cultural disconnect in metro Detroit. Before you say “oh, another city vs. suburbs rant!” let’s be clear: It’s way more complicated than just city vs. suburb. Or black vs. white. This cultural divide doesn’t respect city boundaries. Sure, there’s a geographic element to it, but it’s also tied to family and life experiences. We live in silos. We have a lack of shared experiences and empathy. You could live in, say, Harrison Townsh...

WATCH: The Motor City Is Getting Rid Of A Freeway

In the heart of the Motor City lies a freeway whose days are numbered. I-375 is a mile-long, sunken freeway serving downtown Detroit. Its construction half a century ago destroyed an historic African-American neighborhood. Today, the freeway and its bridges are literally crumbling. It forms a barrier between Greektown and the Lafayette Park neighborhood. The Michigan Department of Transportation says the freeway no longer fits with a Detroit that is seeing major redevelopment. So rathe...

Peek Inside Founders, Detroit's Newest Destination Bar

To say that there has been a lot of buzz around the new Founders in Midtown is an understatement. National publications have been picking it up, one positioning it the anchor of Detroit as America’s next beer city, as well as every outlet in town. Today, I got a chance to take a peek inside of the 14,000 square foot space before the doors swing open to the public at 3 p.m. on Monday. You’ll also get a look at the price points, as the menus are below. And as far as a brewery goes, Foun...

UberEATS Food Delivery Service Launches In Metro Detroit

Detroit’s a geographically spread out region. So running to your favorite restaurant to pick something up might be a bit of a chore — or time you just don’t have between shifts or when you know you’re going to have to stay late. Now, food might just be a tap of an app away if you’re in the city of Detroit some of the more inner ring suburbs. Today ride sharing company Uber announced that they’re launching their food delivery service UberEATS in Detroit. This is the 100th city that they have...

New Founders Taproom In Detroit Opening December 4

Founders is one of Michigan’s most well-known beer brands, and their taproom in Midtown Detroit is just about ready to swing its doors open. Back in April, the Grand Rapids-based brewery announced plans that they were going to open a new location, just a few blocks from the new Little Caesars Arena and the District Detroit development. Well, now it is a reality. On December 4 at 3 p.m., the 14,000 square foot taproom at 456 Charlotte in Detroit will open. That night, they’ll be open until mi...

The record-holding city is currently Lawrence, Kansas. They set the rec...

Detroit Is One Of The Most Sinful Cities In America, Says Data

Here’s an interesting topic to try to describe with data. Can you quantify sinfulness? Well, someone tried. According to some data shared by Wallethub.com, Detroit is America’s 7th most sinful city. Wallethub tried to quantify (one can debate how well) the seven deadly sins: Anger & Hatred, Jealousy, Excesses & Vices, Greed, Lust, Vanity and Laziness. Each of the sins were given 14.3 points each, and broken into sub-categories. We’re sharing them in their entirety because it’s interesting...

41 Ways To #ShopSmall This Small Business Saturday Around Metro Detroit

I’m personally not a fan of shopping on Black Friday. Sure there are some O.K. sales, but I don’t really like crowds. That is why I love shopping on Small Business Saturday. There are also more benefits to shopping small, like keeping your money in the community. While this list is focused on stores and boutiques don’t forget all of the restaurants and other service driven small businesses that are also participating in Small Business Saturday. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #shopsmall th...

Google is moving more than 100 jobs to downtown Detroit. They’ve signed a lease for nearly 30,000 square feet in the new District Detroit as part of Little Caesars Arena. The office, at 52 Henry Street, will open in 2018. The workers coming down will be mostly sales and customer service folks. Not to mention, they will have very visible sign frontage on the recently completed arena that is home to the Detroit Red Wings, the Detroit Pistons, and numerous concerts. “The city of Detroit has a...

Life At The Historic Grande Ballroom? Supporters Are Fundraising For A Structural Engineering Report

The Grande Ballroom is one of the most hallowed spaces in Detroit music history. It has been home to jazz, big band, rock. It was a center of Detroit’s counterculture movement. It also is a gem of a building designed by Charles Agree and completed in 1928. He left his mark on a variety of structures around town like the Vanity Ballroom, the Whittier Hotel and others. But what will be next for the place that’s seen a couple lives and been sitting closed since 1972? It’s currently owned by t...

There’s going to be another java option opening up in Detroit. We spied a new Biggby Coffee on Livernois between McNichols (a.k.a. Six Mile) and 7 Mile near the Avenue of Fashion. That’s at the border of the University District and Bagley neighborhoods. Biggby is a franchised chain based out of Lansing, Michigan founded in 1995 and has 182 stores open in Michigan as of 2016. There was formerly a location on Woodward in Midtown, but their Detroit stores for now are within larger complexes lik...

Average Rents In City Of Detroit Skyrocket 30% In Just Three Years

It’s something that a lot of Detroiters have been feeling but the data hasn’t been there to back it up — until now. A new report from SmartAsset utilizing U.S. Census Data shows that rent is rising very quickly in the City of Detroit. So fast that when compared to income, it’s the fifth fastest rising rental market as far as percentage of household income. Taking top spot on the list was New Orleans, who saw their rents rise as a percentage of their income 10.5%. Then Cleveland, 9.2%; Chicag...

SI Report: Detroit Not Getting Major League Soccer Team

Detroit’s bid for a Major League Soccer team continues to have signs that, despite all of the positive press Team Gilbert/Gores want to foist on the local media around this, it is not going anywhere. The latest is in a report by Grant Wahl in Sports Illustrated that cites industry insiders that Cincinnati, Nashville, Sacramento and a fourth entrant, Miami, with another bid being put together by star David Beckham that’s a separate item. I’m being told the two expansion teams will likely come...
