Pair Of Bicyclist Abduction & Assault Incidents In Detroit Raise Safety Questions

Two abductions of females on bicycles has the community talking and wondering what to do to keep safe on Detroit’s streets. Detroit’s bicycling community is seeing strong gains, between more bicyclists on the road and they city’s focus on bike sharing and protected bike lanes. But two incidents raise questions about being protected from a personal safety perspective. Both incidents occurred less than a mile from the Russell Industrial Center. First, there was an abduction on Saturday, Sept...

GreenSpace Expands Into Vegan Fast Casual With New Royal Oak Location

In a town known for coneys and pizza, meatless eating is also a thing in Detroit. In fact, in 2016, PETA called out Metro Detroit for being one of the top vegan eating destinations in the nation.  A restaurant that uses no animal products — GreenSpace — is expanding beyond their downtown Ferndale flagship into the fast casual space, but there will be no chicken, no beef, and no shrimp on this menu. Heck, no traditional cheese either (that’s an animal product, after all). “‘Fast food’ and ‘...

$27 Million Renovation & Expansion Coming To Historic Riverfront Building

A building that has sat vacant for at least two decades is going to see new life on Detroit’s riverfront. Today, city officials announced that Detroit-based developer Banyan Investments will redevelop the historic building into a mixed-use project and add three to six additional stories on the building. In 1907, according to the city of Detroit, the first two structures in the industrial complex were built. A three-story addition followed in the late 1920s. The building is named af...

A national David vs. Goliath story in the film business has the side effect of pitting two local theatres that show art and specialty films against each other. Four small theatres, including Cinema Detroit located in the Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, are suing Landmark Theatres and their parent company 2929 Entertainment (owned by billionaire and Shark Tank star Mark Cuban), claiming that the chain is coercing agreements from film distributors. The suit was filed by Cinema Detroit as well...

Allow Me To Freak Out About $400K Homes In My Old Detroit Neighborhood

I last spent time in Woodbridge Farms, my old neighborhood, last fall, when I joined some coworkers to plant trees with crews from the Greening of Detroit. And I wrote about what I saw and how it illustrated the dramatic and jarring ways that Detroit is changing. But nothing quite prepared me for this. A developer team is working with the city to invest around $6 million to build up to 27 houses in the historic neighborhood, which began in the early 1870s. All good. But here’s the kicker, vi...

The Best Mayor In Detroit’s History And “Idol of the People” Deserves More Recognition

The city of Detroit is rife with nods and tributes to ghosts of its past, legendary and sometimes infamous individuals who have helped shape the city for hundreds of years. Names like Woodward, Lodge, Fisher, and Cass are so synonymous with the thoroughfares and buildings they represent that many people don’t even associate the names with the actual individuals they represent. However, one name that doesn’t appear on any major road signs or building facades is that of a man who may be the grea...

Signs Seem To Be Pointing To More QLINE Routes In Detroit

It’s not hard to think that there is a concerted push for more QLINE routes, especially in Greater Downtown. It’s important to watch because when they focus, what major funders want they often get in this town and money starts to appear. The latest hint of a new QLINE route would be from downtown to the old Michigan Central Train Station, as Matthew Maroun (the son of Billionaire Matty Maroun) hinted in a long interview interview with Crain’s as part of their coverage for their Homecoming ev...

Amazon Should Be A Wake-up Call To Metro Detroit To Think Bigger

All the Mayor’s horses and all of Dan Gilbert’s men are looking to put together a deal together with Amazon. After all, the prospect of 50,000 jobs — with well-paying salaries — and a $5 billion total investment has the entire nation talking about where the online retail Goliath will build its second headquarters. Beyond the breathless headlines that will get shared ad nauseum on Facebook, we should take this as an opportunity to look at our region in the mirror and ask ourselves how we coul...

But two minutes in, the video takes a...
