"Greetings From Detroit: Historic Postcards of the Motor City" Now Available For Pre-Order

Dan Austin is the man when it comes to history around Detroit. He has had a set of successful books (Lost Detroit, the Forgotten Landmarks of Detroit, etc.) and based on his excellent track record I’m excited that he has a new book coming out called “Greetings from Detroit: Historic Postcards of the Motor City.” If you are a fan of books about Detroit and vintage postcards, then this book is for you. And, from the looks of it, the book for me. Austin’s newest book features over 230 histori...

Their Charter School Was In Debt, So Teachers Won't Get Paid

Furious teachers at a recently shuttered Detroit charter school were notified Wednesday that they won’t be paid thousands of dollars they earned during the last school year. Teachers at the Michigan Technical Academy had contracts that required the school to pay them through the summer for work they did during the school year. But the school’s management company, Matchbook Learning, alerted teachers in an email Wednesday that the money would instead go to pay off the school’s debts. “Last Fr...

Detroit’s entrepreneurial scene is growing and a big part of that growth, according to a report from HowMuch.net (via Visual Capitalist), is women-owned businesses. The Motor City ranks second in the United States behind Memphis, Tennessee for the percentage of growth of women-owned businesses over the last decade. It's About More Than Just That One Window

NOTE: Dan Gilbert, owner of Bedrock, has apologized for the controversial “See Detroit Like We Do” advertisement. Read that by clicking here. A controversial window graphic has intensified a conversation in the Detroit community about race and inclusion on the 50th anniversary of the events of 1967. Let’s set the table. Bedrock, a real estate company owned by the billionaire founder of Quicken Loans, Dan Gilbert, owns the Vinton building. The Vinton was built in 1917 designed by Albert Kah...

New Children's Book Teaches Pride In Detroit, Power Of Women Behind War Effort

Rosie the Riveter is such an iconic image, that sometimes people forget that it was more than just one woman that worked on the home front providing aid during World War II. Sure, there are books about the women behind the war time effort and Detroit becoming the Arsenal of Democracy but they are mostly stuffy hard to read books. Let’s face it, none of them are really good for kids. That’s where Rosie, A Detroit Herstory Book by Bailey Sisoy Isgro  comes in. Rosie is a children’s book...

With the increased pace of investment, Detroit’s becoming more and more bike friendly it seems by the week. Today brings news that the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) received a $250,000 grant from the Erb Family Foundation. The grant will fund green infrastructure and stormwater management improvements as part of the Downtown Bike Network. That’s a 1.6-mile infrastructure project that improves street and sidewalk non-motorized connections throughout the downtown area. The project will...

Detroit's West Riverfront Park Aims To Become A World Class Destination, Gets Grant For Design Competition

Detroit’s riverfront to the east has undergone an immense transformation and has won numerous awards. Now, if all goes to plan, the West Riverfront Park will become a “world class” destination. If you’re not familiar, West Riverfront Park is a 22 acre parcel between Eighth and Rosa Parks Boulevard along the Detroit riverfront, just behind the giant post office there on Fort. Various events like MoPop and this year’s Charivari Festival will be held there. To make this reimagination happen, yo...

In Recent Reports Of Possible Major League Soccer Expansion, No Mention Of Detroit

Although here in Detroit there are the twin stories of should Wayne County trade with billionaires Dan Gilbert and Tom Gores for the incomplete jail site downtown, as well as the recent heckles among some passionate fans that were raised by Palace Sports & Entertainment purchasing web addresses like “DetCitySoccerClub.com,” just one word away in name from the locally popular “Detroit City Football Club,” it’s important to remember that Detroit hasn’t actually been awarded a Major League Soccer t...

Advocates Trying Again To Bring Order To Detroit's Disorganized Public And Charter School Situation

It’s been more than a year since the tearful, emotional night when a divided state legislature blocked a major effort to bring order to Detroit schools. Now some of the parties involved in last year’s fight are regrouping and looking for new ways to improve city schools. Only this time, they’re less likely to look to Lansing for laws that would force schools to report to a powerful school oversight commission. Instead, early discussions appear to be centered on bringing together the his...

8 Before And After Pictures Of Detroit's Beautiful Book Tower Coming Back To Life

The building at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Grand River has a long history, and is one of the most ornate exteriors in the city of Detroit, and possibly the United States. For years the Book Tower was ridiculed as one of Detroit’s ugliest buildings. It turns out when the exterior gets a deep cleaning its intricate art that sits high above the city streets comes to life. Although some of us always appreciated the structure for its unique design. It’s a rare Renaissance-style skyscr...

What Downtown Detroit Is Actually Lacking Is Detroit Style Pizza

Downtown Detroit might not need any more burger joints according to the food critic of Detroit’s paper of record. He might be right. But the whole open letter from Mark Kurlyandchik got me thinking about what downtown, Midtown, and New Center is actually lacking when it comes to restaurants. I’m no seasoned food critic, just a lover of food – but I think I have an answer. Detroit style pizza. Sure there is Niki’s, but is it even that good? And that’s just one place. Pizza Papalis doesn’t...

Car-Free Pedestrian Plazas Are Suddenly All The Rage In The Motor City

Detroit, for decades a monument to the hegemony of the automobile, is increasingly ceding road real estate to pedestrian uses, most recently through the creation of outdoor public plazas. Since spring, at least three pedestrian plazas have opened around town: the Gratiot-Randolph public plaza, a new plaza on Woodward between Jefferson and Larned, and now a pop-up pedestrian plaza in suburban Oak Park along Nine Mile Road. Curbed Detroit, in a story about the new Woodward Avenue plaza, puts t...
