Detroit: "It's Been The Best Food Tour Of Any City I've Ever Done, Easily"

Detroit’s food scene is getting more and more attention – and this one caught our eye because of the pure love for Detroit dishes. The YouTube channel numbersixwithcheese, featuring Sean Ely and Corey Wagner from Chicago, recently did a food tour swing through Detroit and their love was high for Coneys, Pizza, and of course, the Slow’s Yardbird. They even took a swing at the American vs. Lafayette Coney debate. The pair normally reviews chain restaurants and has some local stuff thrown...

Major Detroit Greenway Project Takes A Big Step Forward

If you’ve seen the Dequindre Cut, and how much of an improvement that is for biking, running and walking — imagine if it were 26 miles long. Plans for a massive, 26-mile greenway that winds through the cities of Detroit, Highland Park and Dearborn took a major step forward today, with the City of Detroit and Conrail coming to an agreement in principle to purchase 7.5 miles of railroad property. The Inner Circle Greenway plans to make use of existing paths like the Detroit RiverWalk and Dequi...

The Balloon Hullabaloo Brings Booze, Bars And A Great Cause Together

One of the things we’ve found over the years is that Detroiters love to mix a good time with a good cause. So when this came across our desk, we thought we’d share. The Balloon Hullabaloo is a charity bar crawl in Detroit. 100 percent of all the ticket sales go to help Humble Design and families who have recently left homeless or abuse shelters by providing furniture and hope in their homes. We profiled Humble Design awhile back here.  The crawl is July 15 and everyone who comes will get a...

QLINE, I Love You But We Need To Talk

At first, you hear the warm voice of Carmen Harlan. “Grand Circus Park, brought to you by Chevrolet” the recorded message assures the passengers. Next, you hear some weird, garbled digital voice finishing the sentence, telling you about the attractions at that stop. That contrast is exactly the QLINE today. We wanted to step back, let some kinks work out, and then add something. Optimistically, one could think hey, it’ll take some time to iron things out. We’re now a month in, and the...

Check Out The Construction Progress Of Downtown Detroit's New Beacon Park

Across Grand River from the beautifully restored Grand Army of the Republic building a park is under construction, paid for by DTE Energy. Today, that park got a name. According to the Empowering Michigan blog, it’s going to be called “Beacon Park.” The circular, open lawn is the largest of any downtown Detroit park and gives visitors room to run, play, relax and recharge. With year-round programming, interactive light installations, and a brasserie-style restaurant with a rooftop garden, se...

Comerica Commits $5 Million To Home Appraisal Gap In Detroit Through Detroit Home Mortgage

Less than 20 percent of homes purchased in the city of Detroit have mortgages. It’s currently a cash system where you either have all the money you need for the house, or you can’t buy it. That shuts the door on anyone who doesn’t have the purchase price of a house sitting in the bank – and that means most people can’t buy a house in Detroit if they wanted to. This happens for a variety of reasons, but the long and short of it means that if the gap is too big, the mortgage doesn’t happen and t...

8 Amazing Dutch Girl Donuts, Ranked

Dutch Girl Donuts have been a mainstay in Detroit since 1947, and for good reason. The donuts there are really good. We have often joked about doing a ranked list of the donuts at Dutch Girl, but have laughed it off as a silly idea. Until today, when our long standing plans got rained out. We were on that side of town so we decided to just hit up Dutch Girl for a treat.   If you’re wondering why there are no cake donuts on the list, it is because they were already sold out. Which goes...

A Tale Of Two Pre-Ks In Detroit Shows Gap Between Classrooms That Get Private Donations And Those That Don't

LaWanda Marshall and Candace Graham both teach pre-kindergarten at the Carver STEM Academy on Detroit’s west side. Both have colorful, toy-filled classrooms, computers for students to use and assistant teachers to help guide their four- and five-year olds as they learn and explore. But Marshall’s classroom has other things too — lots and lots of other things that regularly arrive like gifts from the pre-K gods. “The office calls and says you have a package, and we’re like ‘Yay!’ and the ki...

Duggan Announces Program To Give A Hand Up To Existing Detroit Businesses

One of the many recurring discussions in the city is that there’s a feeling that new businesses get more support than those who have been in the city and stuck it out. With the aim of giving neighborhood businesses the attention they deserve, Mayor Mike Duggan announced today a new program from the City of Detroit and The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC) called Motor City Re-Store. The first round of Motor City Re-Store will start on Thursday, June 15 when the application process o...

Your City 5: Things To Do For The Weekend Of June 9-11

If you were hoping for a laid back weekend my suggestion is to put those plans on hold and giddy-up and get out the door. Detroit is going to be hopping this weekend, and if you miss it, you’re missing out. Let’s get this show started. Crash Detroit Benefit Concert One of my favorite festivals every summer is the Crash Detroit Festival. It is basically a street band extravaganza with bands coming from around the country to perform in Detroit. This Friday night there will be a benefit co...

No Music, No Art, No Gym, Overcrowded Classrooms And Teacher Shortages: The Journey Of Detroit's New Superintendent Starts Here

Detroit schools have been buzzing these last two weeks with what feels like a fresh start. A new superintendent —  Nikolai Vitti — has landed in the city and started his job as the first new leader of what is officially a new district. He uses words like “transformation” and “vision” and “hope” to describe a future when Detroit schools will begin to address the intensive challenges that have contributed to some of the lowest test scores in the nation. He sees Detroit becoming “a mecca of imp...

Tesla Pops Up A Mobile Gallery Outside Of The Shinola Store In Midtown

Tesla just can’t stop poking at the Detroit 3 in their backyard. Here’s their latest provocation. The California-based automaker may not have the unit sales to be considered a “large” automaker, but their mindshare is second to none – so much so that the company is now worth more than Ford Motor Company while selling far fewer units. At Christmastime, they set up a gallery store in Somerset Mall, and now through June 11 they have a pop-up “gallery” outside the Midtown Shinola store in Detroi...

Gleaners Food Bank Gets $50,000 Grant To Fund School Food Mobile Pantry Program

Here’s some good news for low-income school kids who need nutritious meals. The Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan was awarded a $50,000 grant last week from the Morgan Stanley Foundation. The grant will help fund the School Food Mobile Pantry program, a Gleaners program that helps fight child hunger by making sure low-income families have a readily accessible source of healthy and nutritious food to prepare at home. Morgan Stanley employees from Detroit-area branches pr...

Detroit's Queen Of Fashion Retail Expands Her Domain With Yama

When you mention Detroit and retail, one name quickly comes to mind: Rachel Lutz, the proprietress of two of the city’s most influential stores: The Peacock Room and Frida. Lutz stole the show (again) this week at the Mackinac Policy Conference when she made news in announcing the opening of her third retail location. Lutz, who is attending the conference on Mackinac Island, is bringing her version of Modernism in terms of clothing, accessories and more with Yama. It will find a home in the...
