23 Detroit Neighborhood Corridors To See $125M In Bond Funds

A program pitched by Mayor Mike Duggan to make 23 of the city of Detroit’s commercial streets more attractive and pedestrian friendly was approved by the Detroit City Council. The idea is that through this investment, and follow-up investments by businesses, Detroit would recapture some of the estimated $2.6 billion in spending Detroit residents do annually in surrounding communities, according to a study soon to be released by the Detroit Economic Development Corporation (DEGC). Here’s the...

Get Ready To Eat And Drink Up Because Here Are Your 2017 Dine Drink Detroit Menus

Dine Drink Detroit, a ten day festival of $15 food & drink entrees, is back. It’s always been one of our favorite events for us because of the kind price point and the variety of places to try out. Another fun thing is there are some restaurant names almost everyone knows, and then some lesser known or newer places to give a spin. Here’s what you need to know. There aren’t reservations required, either. So at any of the 21 restaurants from October 16 – October 26, you’ll be able to sit d...

Henry The Hatter Finds New Home In Eastern Market, To Open By Thanksgiving

We’ve been following the story of Henry The Hatter since he was unexpectedly booted out of his long-time location in downtown Detroit. If you want to get nerdy, we have a neat episode of the Daily Detroit Happy Hour podcast with an in-depth interview. The latest is that Paul Wasserman, the owner, has found a new Detroit location and that although there’s work to be done, he’s aiming to get it up and running in time for the holiday shopping season. It’s going in the former 3 Dogs 1 Cat 4 De...

Old Joe Muer Site On Gratiot To See New Development

A property that once was home to an icon of Detroit’s restaurant history is going to see new life. This piece of land that hasn’t been commercially used since Joe Muer’s closed in 1998 is in what is now a prime location. The unusually shaped property sits along Gratiot Avenue at St. Aubin and up against the popular Dequindre Cut. The site, near Eastern Market, will be redeveloped through an agreement between The Platform, and DVP LLC. The nuts and bolts of the announcement indicate we’re s...

Let's Peek Inside The New Eastern Market Brewing Company

The newest addition to Detroit’s beer scene is the Eastern Market Brewing Company. A project that’s the brainchild of Dayne Bartscht, Devin Drowley, and Paul Hoskin, the loft-like space at 2515 Riopelle Street in Detroit is open and inviting. Having visited the space just as work began last year, the transformation is amazing. They kept the structure of the building, but really added just the right amount of design touch to make the space special. There were just a few beers on tap...

QUICK TIP: St. Joseph's Oktoberfest This Sunday

Even though the weather is quite warm, it’s that season for cold beer and fun at Oktoberfests around the area. One that’s down in the Eastern Market area you might want to check out is this Sunday, September 23 at St. Joseph’s. This is the 12th year for the event. It kicks off just after noon — 12:30 p.m. — and runs until 8:30 p.m. so even if you hang out until the end you’ll still be good for work Monday morning. We’re going to get into the lineup for the day in a second, but let’s talk a...

For Day To Day Usage, MoGo Bike Share Beats The QLINE Hands Down

When it comes to practicality, the QLINE streetcar has been a disappointment. Our team is pretty bike- and walk- friendly, and will take the bus if the timing makes sense. We have contributors who live near the QLINE and the MoGo stations, and others who live near bus lines and use them (in the suburbs, too). When both opened earlier this year, we had multiple debates over which service was going to come out on top. It was evenly split between bike share lovers and believers in the power o...

There also will be a planning framework that will be created to incorporate the half-mile corridor to either side of the greenway itself....

Here's Drone Video Of That Eastern Market Warehouse Fire Over The Weekend

A dry foods warehouse at Divison and Riopelle streets caught fire over the weekend, and YouTube user Alex Fire Chaser has some great footage from the air of the fire. The fire is currently being investigated as suspicious according to MLive and had been undergoing remodeling work say the Freep. The building caught fire at about 9:30 a.m. and after about an hour, fire crews started fighting the blaze from the outside only due to concerns the building or roof would collapse. The fire was con...

Pedaling To The Pints: A Tested Road Map For A Detroit Bike Share Bar Crawl

Although bike-sharing initially arrived in downtown Detroit several years ago for members of the locally notorious “Family of Companies” in the Gilbert empire via Zagster, it was not widely available to the masses until the launch of MoGo last month. MoGo is Detroit’s first widely available bike sharing service with 43 stations across the city. All early indications are that it is a success, with the court of public opinion deeming it a much more customer friendly and viable option (at least f...

Your City 5: Things To Do In Detroit For The Weekend Of May 19-21

Happy weekend to you all. I can not believe that we are already half way done with the month of May. We’ve got a lot of great events happening this weekend, so let’s get started. Don Giovanni – Detroit  I had to include this event on this week’s City 5 because it combines two of my favorite things; Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cast will perform Don Giovanni as the characters from Rocky Horror. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but hear me out. Opera MODO is...

The Station Map For MoGo, Detroit's Bike Share, Is Now Up. Let's Take A Look.

Detroit’s bike sharing system has been a much-talked about addition to greater downtown Detroit’s transportation options. We’ve walked through how to use the system before. It’s a public bike sharing system where you pay by the half hour (a variety of other passes are available) to use a bike to get around the downtown area. Today the map went live ahead of the system’s official launch on Tuesday, May 23. It reveals that the system will reach as far west as Clark Park, as far east as West Vi...
