6 Record Stores Pick A Quintessential Detroit Album For Record Store Day

Saturday, April 22 is Record Store Day. If you are into vinyl then you probably already know this. Instead of doing a regular old list of area record stores I thought I would change things up a bit. This year I wanted to know what people’s ultimate Detroit album is. The quintessential album that speaks to them on a personal level. The musical legacy that Detroit has means that there are so many avenues one person could take. So I drove to a few record stores around the area to ask. This qu...

New Farm To Freezer In Eastern Market Will Create Jobs, Offer More Fresh Food Access

It’s going to be even easier for schools, grocery stores, community feeding programs and restaurants to get, and keep, fresh foods from local farmers at Eastern Market. The market announced this week a partnership with Michigan Farm to Freezer, a community-based processor of fruits and vegetables in Northern Michigan that is expanding operations to Detroit. It takes produce sourced and purchased from local farmers, flash-freezes it to preserve nutrients and flavors and packages it for purcha...

Sarap Detroit And Chef Aaron Egan To Collaborate On Jewish-Filipino Pop Up Dinner At Eastern Market

It’s not very often that you see Jewish cuisine fused with Filipino food, however on Monday, April 24 there will be a collaborative pop up with Sarap Detroit and chef Aaron Egan. The collaboration started after Sarap chef Jake Williams learned that 1,200 European Jews ended up in the Philippines during World War II. Chef Williams approached chef Egan with the idea to collaborate on the pop up. “Jewish and Filipino cuisines may seem like an unlikely pairing, but it’s a perfect collaboration...

It seems like Detroit has been attracting a lot of chefs from Chicago lately between Maccabees Traders, Voyager, and Thomas Lent from the Foundation Hotel.  There are two more chefs coming over from the Windy City in April to do a pop up – and as we all know, pop ups can sometimes be forerunners of something more lasting. Christine Cikowski and Josh Kulp, the chef/owners of Honey Butter Fried Chicken will be coming to Detroit for a weekend of pop ups at Russell Street Deli and Grey Ghost....

The 9 Epic Metro Detroit Delis You Should Visit

There’s nothing like an excellent deli sandwich. It’s perfection between two slices of bread. And Detroit has some amazing delis if you know where to look. Over the last few weeks I dragged my family and friends all over the Detroit area eating sandwich after sandwich in the name of finding the Metro Detroit delis that really stand out in my mind over the rest. Enjoy and eat up, Detroit! 1. Ernie’s Market – Oak Park Living so close to Ernie’s is a blessing and a curse. Knowing this del...

If you like dining around Detroit now is the time to do it, because Detroit Restaurant Week starts today. Detroit Restaurant Week will run Friday, February 3 until Sunday, February 12. Last month we gave you all a heads up that DRW would be back in February. We didn’t know much information about what restaurants would be involved, but now we do. This year there is a small change as there are five restaurants that are offering a three course meal for $29, whereas there are twenty-one restaura...

These 3 Neighborhoods Will Be The Hottest In Metro Detroit This Year, According To Redfin

In the last few years the city of Detroit has seen the beginnings of a real estate resurgence. Although challenges remain in the city real estate market, such as continued difficulty in getting mortgages and the market having a high percentage of cash sales, there are three neighborhoods in Detroit that the real estate site Redfin (who also provides real estate agents as a service) say are the hottest in the metro area. Their predictions aren’t just for the city, but the region as a whole. I...

Now You Can Fly A Potato Through Eastern Market From The Comfort Of Your Own Home

Count this as one of the more fun online Detroit-themed surprises this year. While looking up some information for another post, we stumbled upon a 404 page. That basically means a page that wasn’t found from a bad link. But what happened next? It made us lose an hour of the day. Turns out on that 404 page there’s a game where you can fly a potato with wings through Eastern Market, much like the addictive game “Flappy Bird” that was around for awhile. The background is an 8-bit rendering of...

This is the second year where artists from near and far have descended on Detroit to paint some of the biggest canvases there are – the sides of buildings. It proves you can teach an old dog, in case Eastern Market that’s been around for more than 150 years, new tricks. We focused on the new m...

14 Photos That Show How Great Tuesdays Can Be In Eastern Market

Almost everyone knows about Saturdays at Eastern Market. But did you know that there’s a Tuesday market? And although not as large as Saturday, for me – who does some serious grocery shopping for my family here – Tuesday can be a great option for you. Farmers come with their trucks filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, meat, eggs, and flowers – with plenty to choose from. Others like Bring Out The You Jewelry come with hand made goods for sale. The Tuesday Market began in J...

We’ve entered the heart of the holiday season, the time when folks start to feel the pressure of months of shopping procrastination. If you’re like me, you’ve been holding out until now to dive into the grueling world of holiday shopping, and it’s finally time to scrape what’s left of the shelves and make your best attempt at manipulating wrapping paper and tape to get your mediocre gifts into proper form for giving.
