Architect Of The Renaissance Center Dies At 93

The Detroit Renaissance Center is the building that most around the country know Detroit by. And its architect is gone. That man was John C. Portman Jr., who died on Saturday at the age of 93 in Atlanta, Georgia. Portman was also the mind behind various developments around the world such as the Peachtree Center in Atlanta; the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco; the Yintai Center in Beijing; and the Tomorrow Square in Shanghai. The General Motors Renaissance Center (which was actually championed by Henry Ford II and housed some Ford offices for awhile), love it or hate it, is an iconic part of Detroit’s skyline. Announced in 1971, the first office tower opened in 1976. It’s the General Motors RenCen thanks to a purchase in 1996 where they moved from their headquarters in New Center to the Portman-designed structure on the riverfront.
