Last night on the rooftop of the Madison Building, Toma Detroit, the aspiring tequila and mezcal bar and restaurant, won this year’s Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest.
The owners will receive $50,000 from Comerica Bank, and more than $200,000 in support services like public relations, IT and legal counsel.
The winners were chosen by a panel of judges after a round of public pitches.
Our Shianne Nocerini was at the Hatch Off last night and caught up with co-owner José Maldonado. Listen to the segment in the player above.
The owners of Toma plan on using the money from Hatch to purchase the liquor license, and that will help them open sooner.
They’re going to locate in the old Casey’s Bar space on Michigan Avenue in Corktown.
The three other finalists in this years contest were Neighborhood Grocery, Paradise Natural Foods and Slyde Detroit, a burger joint with plans to open at the corner of Third and Brainard in the city’s Midtown neighborhood.
