One of the tastiest developments in Detroit during the last few years has been the increasing number of food trucks posting up at Campus Martius and events throughout the city. We’ve written about the subject before, but we recently came across a newer kid on the block who’s serving up some of the best grub on wheels around.
Taste-Budz Inc. is the brain child of Chef Gabe, who’s concocted a menu featuring a fresh twist on some savory classics.
The menu is simple. Three sandwiches – one pork, one chicken, one steak – rounded out by stellar sides like the parmesan and roasted garlic fries or deep fried ham and cheese sticks – which were mind blowing.
We opted to first try the “2Faced ‘Chix’ chicken panni sandwich,” and it did not disappoint.
The organic grilled chicken was smothered in a perfect blend of fresh pesto, sun dried tomatoes and swiss cheese, then grilled to true panini perfection. For $7.50, the hearty sandwich offered more than enough to fill a hungry belly until dinner time.
Next on the docket was the “From Philly to the ‘D’ sandwich. This delightful dish is Chef Gabe’s take on the classic Philly Cheese Steak sandwich with a little Detroit twist.
The steak, cooked just right and melt in your mouth juicy, was laid beneath a steamy bed of caramelized onions, peppers, and melted swiss cheese. All that goodness is then stacked high between two slices of perfectly toasted hoagie bread, and served up hot and ready for rapid consumption.
The rich and flavorful fries were the perfect compliment to both sandwiches. PRO TIP – Throw a few on your sandwich to bump the whole experience up to the next level.
Last but not least was a desert sent straight from the heavens, or more likely, the depths of hell – DEEP FRIED OREOS.
The molten batter breaks down the once crunchy cookie into a gooey, cake-like substance. The crispy batter fills in the crunch void, making biting into one of these gluttonous gobs a truly other worldly experience; especially when you drizzle the treat in the provided melted chocolate. Your taste “budz” will thank you, though your arteries might be a bit upset.
