Well hello there everyone! We’re back, back, back again for another round of your City 5.
This week seems to have flown by. How are we already midway through January?
There is so much happening around Detroit this weekend… so you’ve got a lot of options.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Michigan Central Station Winter Festival
Boy oh boy…Ford has really been taking the time to showcase its latest investment in the city of Detroit. I’m loving it.
This weekend kicks off the inaugural Michigan Central Station Winter Festival. It will run Friday, January 18 until Sunday, January 27.
The festival will take place outside of the station inside a heated tent. Construction has begun inside the station, so it would be unsafe for the public.
There will be a 3D light show, graffiti painting, live performances, s’mores, ice carvings, kids actives, vendors, and plenty of food trucks.
You’ll also be able to see artifacts from the station during the festival. Be sure to listen to the special all Shianne episode of the podcast to hear about some of the items that will be on display.
The event is free to attend and is family friendly.
Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday January 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Monday through Sunday from 5:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Michigan Central Station is located at 2001 15th Street Detroit, Michigan 48216
The Quicken Loans Winter Blast Weekends, Round One
This Saturday kicks off the first weekend for the Quicken Loans Winter Blast Weekends. Yep, that’s plural. This year there is a huge change to the popular winter festival. Instead of being held over one weekend, the festival will now take place over the next four weekends.
Each weekend there will be a specific theme, and they have divided all of the traditional Winter Blast attractions between the four weekends.
The theme this weekend is Winter Sports Weekend. You’ll be able to ice skate for free this weekend. There will also be hockey-inspired slapshot games and winter-themed cornhole. Instead of bean bags you will use “snowballs” to play. There will also be plenty of live music, buskers, family friendly arts and crafts, marshmallow roasting, and a food truck rally.
This weekend Thornetta Davis will be singing on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. You can find the schedule for all of the musical performers here.
The other big piece of news is that Winter Blast Weekends are now free to attend.
Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Monday 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Campus Martius Park is located at 800 Woodward Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48226
North American International Auto Show
I usually don’t include the North American International Auto Show in the City 5 because it’s an annual thing that everyone knows about. But this is the last year that the auto show will be held in January. And that kind of makes me nostalgic.
Sven spent some time at Cobo Center this week covering the NAIAS, so I’ll let him take it from here.
You can check out the NAIAS starting on Saturday, January 19 through Sunday, January 27. The hours are 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. with the exception of January 27 when the hours will be 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Cobo Center is located at 1 Washington Boulevard Detroit, Michigan 48226
5th Annual Titties For Pitties Fundraiser
If your vin diagram has dogs and burlesque then have I got a match for you.
This Saturday night is the 5th annual Titties For Pitties Benefit for Pretties For Pitties. It will be held at El Club in Southwest Detroit.
This is the largest fundraiser for the nonprofit and all proceeds will go towards the organization.
Lilith Von Tal will be the emcee for the evening and there will be burlesque performances by Aria Moon, Lilly Rascal, Miss Holly Hock, Mabel Syrup, Magenta Demure, Kitty Hawk & Eris, Sophia Von Stardust, Leena Allure, and Wednesday Wilhelm.
Tickets start out at $20 and go up to $50 for the VIP treatment. You can pick up your tickets here. This should go without saying, but the show is 18 and over.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the performance starts at 7:00 p.m.
El Club is located at 4114 West Vernor Highway Detroit, Michigan 48209
January City Wide Soup
If you’re looking for something fun to do, that will also have a positive impact on someone trying to do something in Detroit you really need to get to Detroit SOUP this Sunday night.
Detroit SOUP is a group of people who come together to eat, listen to people’s proposals, and then vote on who should receive the money they have collected from the evening. If this sounds like fun you should totally go.
SOUP is a potluck and organizers suggest bringing soup, salad, or dessert to contribute to the large group. (There is usually between 150-200 people who come to these SOUP events.)
There will also be a Build Institute Bazaar so come find out about some really cool businesses.
Bring in a donation of $10 to attend the SOUP. At the end of the night everything that is raised goes to who ever gets the most votes.
Sunday, January 20 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
