Hello, Detroit! We’re here once again with your weekend rundown in the City 5. It’s shaping up to be a solid round up of events, so let’s get down to business.
Hockeytown BrewHaHa Fowling & Feasting Event – Friday, 6 p.m. – Joe Louis Arena, Detroit – $47.50
This is the sixth installment of the hugely successful Hockeytown BrewHaHa Event Series, and they’re pulling out all the stops for this round, as the Red Wings and the Fowling Warehouse bring Detroit’s newest bar sport sensation to the Joe.
What is Fowling you ask?
The football bowling pin game known as Fowling is a hybrid game that combines elements of football, bowling, and horseshoes. The object of the game is for teams to be the first to knock all their opponents’ pins down by throwing a football at 10 bowling pins which are positioned in a triangular format. We weren’t sure what to think either, but seriously, this game rules.
Hurling footballs at bowling pins is sure to work up your appetite, so once you’ve schooled your best friend in a spirited round of fowling, refresh and relax with an array of local and regionally brewed beers, as well as the culinary stylings of Olympia Entertainment’s Executive Chef John Borso.

Friday Night Movies – Friday, 8 p.m. – New Center Park, Detroit – Free Admission
If you’re like me and any form of athletics gives you major league anxiety, then cruise down to New Center Park on Friday night for the next installment of their Friday night movies series, presented by HAP.
This laid back weekly event is fun for the whole family and admission is free! Grab some blankets and use the cash you’ll save on the price of a theater ticket to stock up on sweet and salty snacks.
Doors open at 8:00 p.m. and screenings start between 9:00 and 9:30.
This week, enjoy a taste of Christmas in July with the classic “A Nightmare Before Christmas”.
So come on, let the kids live a little by staying up past their bedtime while peaking on Swedish Fish in the park.

Charivari – Saturday and Sunday 12-10 p.m. – Belle Isle, Detroit – Free Admission
Saturday welcomes yet another killer summertime music festival to the city.
Charivari, now in its second year, is billed as a celebration of Electronic Music in all of its forms.
It takes place Saturday and Sunday at Belle Isle and boasts an impressive line up, featuring Detroit favorites like DJ Godfather, Bruce Bailey, and Terrance Parker, as well as up and coming local and national talent.
The event runs from 12-10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and festival organizers encourage patrons to bring the whole family – though we would suggest bringing some headphones for the little guys and gals.
If you need a break from the beats, cruise the grounds and enjoy the vast array of sponsored entertainment, from food and drinks, to art, fashion and fitness vendors.
After the event, it’s time to call the babysitter and step out for some grown up fun. Organizers have arranged a series of after parties, called the Fallout Shelter, at some of the city’s most popular clubs. Last year these after parties sold out quickly, so be sure to get your tickets early.
Oh, and the coolest part of this festival? Admission is 100% free of charge. Good luck finding that kind of a deal for an event of this caliber anywhere else.

2015 B. Nektar Summer Fest – Saturday, 2 p.m. – B. Nektar Meadery, Ferndale – Free Admission
If you’re like us and enjoy catching a moderate to strong buzz on a Saturday afternoon, then check out Ferndale’s B. Nektar Meadery as they celebrate their seventh anniversary with a summer party fit for a Viking warrior.
Enjoy a wide selection of the acclaimed meadery’s bounty, which includes draft meads, cider, and beers.
Rare and limited bottles will be available for purchase for those who truly cherish the unmistakeable stank of good mead.
Food trucks from Hero or Villain, Rouge Estate BBQ, Treat Dreams, and EJ’s Gourmet Street Cuisine will supply the eats for this event, and local bands Lt. Bad, Drift Lifted and Elenora will be kicking out the jams all day.
The event runs from 2-8 p.m. and admission is free, so save your clams and take home a bottle or two of that golden goodness. You’ll feel like a Nordic warlord right in your own home after a few sips of that syrupy potion… at least as far as your drinking choices are concerned. We hope.
Trapped In A Room With A Zombie – Sunday, 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. – Penobscot Building, Detroit – $28
OK, this is arguably the strangest event I’ve featured on this show to date, but I couldn’t resist. I mean, what’s a better cure for Sunday’s hangover than fighting for you life against a flesh-eating zombie?
Intrigued yet? OK, here’s the deal.
Trapped in a Room With a Zombie combines the pressure of the Minute to Win It game show, mystery of a good crime novel, and just a touch of the twilight zone vibe to create a pulse-pounding, team-building activity that will keep your mind racing and adrenaline flowing.
These interactive-theater sessions cast your group as the protagonists in an exciting plot that unfolds as your team works through a list of puzzles to tries and escape the clammy grip of the undead. Each clue gets you closer to finding the key that will unlock the door to freedom, while every 5 minutes the hungry zombie’s chain gets released another foot.

Save the Norris House Fundraiser – Saturday, 12-8 p.m. – The Two Way Inn, Detroit
Good news, friends, we have a bonus event for you this week!
This event comes by way of one of our favorite bars in the D, the Two Way Inn.
The Two Way staff and patrons of the pub are coming together to save the Norris House, one of the city’s architectural gems, from demolition, and are throwing a BBQ to raise some restoration capital.
The home has reportedly been abandoned since the early 1990s. Though it was once the target of arson, the home of Detroit hero Philetus Norris has remained largely intact. The Victorian farmhouse was built in the early 1870s by Col. Philetus Norris, a Civil War veteran who cleared the land around what is now 17815 Mt. Elliot St. In addition to being credited for bringing business and infrastructure to the area, including streets and the railroad, Norris built the Two Way Inn, the oldest bar still operating in the city of Detroit.
Help the good people of the Two Way bring this gem back to life by swinging by for the BBQ on Saturday from 12-8 p.m. Admission is free and funds will help restore the home’s chimney, which is one step in the overhaul of the structure.
