Detroit always has fun to find, if you know where to go. Here are our picks for the best things to check out around the D this weekend.
Friday: Cinema Detroit – Lost River is Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut feature, starring Christina Hendricks, Iain De Caestecker, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith, Ben Mendelsohn, and Eva Mendes. It was filmed here in Detroit in the spring and summer of 2013. There are several other movies to catch this weekend as well as Lost River, so definitely click the Cinema Detroit link above to find the full schedule!
Friday & Saturday: Art X Detroit 2015 Event Lineup – The Art X Detroit festival is coming to end this weekend with their third installment. The three weekend series of visual arts, panel discussions, artist talks, dance, musical and theatrical performances, film screening, literary readings, and workshops has encompassed all the realms of the creative process and has done it with the help of locals dedicated to the awareness of the Art scene in Detroit. If you have not checked out the Art X exhibit or any of the events yet, you must set aside a few hours to do so this weekend! Check out the line up of events in the link above.
Friday & Saturday: Comedy – There are so many comedy happening this weekend, let’s break the three options down for you.
Legendary comedian Dave Chappelle is here Friday performing TWO shows in one night! That’s a lot of talk time, but we know Dave Chappelle is here to impress and leave us in a great mood. Tickets.
While Chappelle is performing at the Fillmore Theatre, the classic duo Steve Martin and Martin Short will also be hosting their very own stand up at the Fox Theatre. The guys that have done it all from hosting Saturday Night Live, appearing in a variety of classic comedy films, as well as touring live standup for years, will be playing at the Fox Theatre on Friday night. Tickets.
To top it off, another amazing comedian we all know with a short fuse, Lewis Black, will be in town playing at the Fox Theatre Saturday night. It will be a very busy (and funny) night on Woodward Avenue. Tickets here.
Saturday: Unity Fest 2K15 – Probably the more anticipated event of the this upcoming weekend is the Unity Fest 2K15 on Saturday night from 5 p.m. – 4 a.m. The lineup is extensive and holds a variety of strong talented musicians. The festival is going to highlight the underground energy of Detroit and offer an experience most have to do serious searching and questioning for. If you have an open mind when it comes to musical styles and genres then I definitely recommend checking this event out.
Sunday: Haute To Death and Bob’s Classic Kicks – Cafe 78 at the MOCAD (Museum of Contemporary Art and Design) is putting together a weekly Sunday get-together that keeps the fun going deep into the weekend. This edition of the party also has the killer food of chef Marc Djozlija. Runs from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. so there’s plenty of time to get home afterward and get ready for your work week.
Have a great and safe weekend, and see you next week!
