The City 5 is known for its ability to pick the not-so-obvious gems of events happening in the Detroit area. This weekend, I’d like to pick out some of the events that really deserve to be showcased. Also, it’s always great to know that the weather will be 75-80 degrees all weekend!
Friday: Detroit Bikes 1216 Launch Party – If you’re in the market to get a new bike for the summer then definitely stop by this grand opening for Detroit Bikes, which are locally produced in a factory in the city. Motorcity Pedicab will also be in the area to take you on a tour of the neighborhood if you are new to the city and would like to spend the day chauffeured around in the sun! Kick off time and more about Detroit Bikes here.
Friday: Catch Nina & The Buffalo Riders – Nina & The Buffalo Riders are a product and cumulative manifestation of Detroit’s legendary musical prowess. This six piece outfit combines soulful vocals, dominant guitar leads, acoustic breaks, screaming organ, and the occasional banjo and mandolin, to create a rock and roll sound you feel in your bones. They will be playing live at the Huma Room at HopCat. Check their music here!
Saturday: The Exchange at Eastern Market – Where a Block Party meets a Flea market meets a Street Fair. This will be a great chance to spend the day outdoors and soak up the sun while enjoying live entertainment and food while looking for a cool gift or a new item to add to your decor.
Saturday: Color Me Rad 5K Detroit – If you’re looking for an excuse to get back in to your work out routine or just need to shake things up a bit, then hit up the Color Me Rad 5K marathon at 9 a.m. on Saturday. It’s the same 3.1 miles with twice as many color stations. That means you won’t go more than half a mile before our volunteers will cover you from head to toe in powders and gels of pink, yellow, green, blue, and violet.
Saturday: Hantz Woodlands Planting Day – One of those days that will really bring some growth to the city and what better way then to bring an entire community together to do so. Hantz Woodlands is going to planting 1,500 tulip poplar trees in the lower east side of Detroit from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday. Last year they had planted 15,000 trees with the help of over 1,400 volunteers. It’s great to see organizations like this that are making our city look more and more beautiful each year. In addition to tree planting, there will be live music, equipment demonstrations, face painting, educational tours, and complimentary food. Location – 3030 Fairview, Detroit, MI 48214.
BONUS:
Sunday: Mother’s Day Breakfast at the Detroit Zoo – What an amazing idea to enjoy breakfast amongst natures most beautiful animals…and your mother! This Sunday, the Detroit Zoo welcomes families to spend their mother’s day starting with a delicious breakfast buffet in the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery with access to the Butterfly Garden. Tickets for adults run $30 and $25 for kids under 14, which will include parking, access to the zoo and the breakfast.
Enjoy your weekend! And if this isn’t enough events and you’re looking for more ideas, check out our events section, updated daily.
