Campus Martius is the best place to eat lunch in Detroit. You can relax watching water jet from the Woodward Fountain. Find peace in a pick up game of basketball or sand volleyball at the Quicken Loans Sports Zone. Still, lunchtime is all about the food. It’s where the food trucks that make the Detroit food scene so vibrant push against the polished corporate sheen powering Detroit’s financial resurgence. These are three food trucks whose lines are well worth the wait.
Mac Shack
Their thing is Mac+Cheese and French fries with personality. Each bowl has its own unique identity. The $8 Koh Sahn Road bowl is packed with big Asian flavor compliments of the lime, peanuts and Sriracha. We won’t mind traveling down that road again. They make their own Sweet Mint Tea, which is a plus and they’ve got a great help-yourself hot sauce station.
Slows To Go
They are not really a food truck, but a stand that looks like an epic wood paneled smokehouse. It makes sense, since Slows’ barbecue is so influential not only in the food word but in development that the “Slows’ Effect,” where one restaurant is the keystone catalyst for neighborhood development, is named after them. Their selection is small, but it is all about the quality. We would happily spend another $10 on The Reason, their smoked pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and pickles, smothered in their famous sauce.
Rollin Stone Wood Fired Pizza
This might be the coolest food truck on the block because it has a wood-fired oven built into the truck. And the pizza that comes out is so good, it is worth the wait. It is even worth putting up a fight. No shame in begging for a slice either. The pizzas are thin-crust Neopolitan-style. The oven was even imported from Italy. It goes up to 900 degrees and the pizza is cooked in less than two minutes. You can’t go wrong with the classic basil, tomato and mozzarella Margherita pizza.
