After four years, plant-based vegan restaurant Greenspace Cafe in downtown Ferndale is closing on February 1, 2020.

According to a message sent in a press release and echoed on their social media, the cafe owned by nationally-renowned Dr. Joel Kahn is closing due to a combination of issues with their landlord, leases, and finances.

However, their fast-casual restaurant concept on Woodward in Royal Oak, Greenspace & Go, will remain open.

The restaurant’s menu had a variety of plant-based dishes and craft cocktails. It was a bit on the higher end of area pricing, considering the portion sizes.

They also offered soy-free, nut-free and gluten-free options.

In their statement, the restaurant said:

We are deeply grateful to our amazing staff over these years, current and past, and our amazing customers. Alas, the healthy plant food market is still tiny even if vibrant and growing.

Downtown Ferndale has had a couple of restaurant closings lately. Sandwich shop M.C. Wiches and Chicago-style pizza joint MiChigo Pizza did not make it through 2019, although apparently you can still get their dough at Western Market on Nine Mile.

Om Cafe, another vegan and vegetarian restaurant that had been serving Ferndale for 33 years, closed in 2018.

The restaurant is owned by Dr. Joel Kahn, a nationally known cardiologist who has appeared on the Joe Rogan podcast and the Dr. Phil show, among other places.

According to the restaurant, GreenSpace Café gift cards will be honored in the Ferndale location through the end of the month.

We’ll talk about this and more on our daily podcast this week.
