So you want to eat out, and you want to try a restaurant you’ve never been to. Well, if you’re looking for fresh, delicious, local food in a family-friendly atmosphere, you can’t go wrong with the Twisted Rooster. It’s a great place to gather if you want to celebrate a birthday or a promotion. The T.V.s that adorn the restaurant’s walls mean you can catch a game – or two – while you’re there.
The interior of the restaurant is relaxed and pleasant, and the music selection is pretty good. Get ready to bop to some of the best songs from the 70s onward.
Michigan-brewed beers are always first on the Twisted Rooster’s draft list. If you can’t make up your mind, you can always get a flight. The restaurant’s daily special on Monday is $3.50 beer flights, so if you want to try a few beers, go on Monday.
The restaurant’s motto is “Commit to the Mitt,” and it does a great job of offering diners a locally-sourced menu. American food is what the Twisted Rooster does best, but it’s by no means boring. You can get unique twists on your favorite dishes, like the Bacon, Egg, and Cheeseburger.
If you want something a little lighter than a full burger, you can choose one the restaurant’s delicious sandwiches or wraps. There’s nothing bland on the menu. Many of the sandwiches have a little kick to them, like the Twisted Rooster. It stuff two pieces of fried flatbread with Founder’s Pale Ale Battered Chicken Tenders, jalapeno cheese, pepper jack, and fresh pico de gallo.
If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, try the Chicken Ramenito. It’s a tortilla stuffed with spicy chicken, Ramen Noodles, beans, Gouda, jalapeno cheese, and enchilada sauce. It sounds like something thrown together on those nights when you need to finish all the leftovers you have lying around, but it will definitely leave you feeling satisfied.
If you’re like me and enjoy releasing your inner kid (or you’re a picky eater who enjoys the simple things in life), try the Beer Battered Chicken Strips. They’re crispy, not crunchy, and pack the right amount of flavor.
You can dip your chicken in a few sauces. I chose the Twisted BBQ sauce, but you can also choose from McClure’s Bloody Mary Ranch, Maple-Sriracha, or RedHot Honey sauces. I asked if they had gravy (chicken strips always go best with gravy), and they didn’t have any. The fries were nothing to write home about. In fact, they could probably use a little more seasoning.
If you’re dining with your kids, the Twisted Rooster offers a pretty good kids’ menu. In addition to the main course, kids can pick their drink and a side, including fresh fruit, waffle fries, carrot sticks, and a side salad. I ordered the cheese quesadilla with waffle fries for my toddler, and she enjoyed it. The waffle fries are much better than the regular fries, but they could still use more seasoning.
My favorite part of any meal is always dessert. If you’re going to the Twisted Rooster, dessert is a must. You may even want to make a trip just for dessert. There are great year-round choices, like the Campfire Cheesecake, but there are also some seasonal ones available, too.
Because I just can’t resist cheesecake smothered in marshmallow and hot fudge, we ordered the Campfire Cheesecake. It’s a great dessert. The cheesecake is moist and delicious, and the marshmallow and hot fudge just add to the whole experience.
As far as price goes, the Twisted Rooster is pretty reasonable. The prices on the menu range from about $9 to about $15, depending on what dish you order. It’s a great date night option for couples or families on a budget.
