Equipment problems have plagued the Detroit Fire Department for a long time. Whether it’s malfunctioning hydrants in the streets or beat up gear from being one of the busiest fire departments in the country (mixed with a lack of funding), Detroit has needed some serious help in that area.
Although this obviously doesn’t solve all the issues, here is some progress. We spotted this video from the Smeal Fire Apparatus Company in Snyder, Nebraska of one of an order of 10 Detroit pumpers which includes images of it being built and rolling off the “line” for a summer delivery.
The info from September says that these are 500 gallon pumpers and can have a 1500-gallon per minute single-stage pump.
They also sport a 5-inch raised roof, 178-inch wheelbase, seats six, and an have an EMS cabinet. Under the “hood” (although in this case, the entire cab pivots up) is a 400-horsepower Cummins ISL9 engine with an Allison GEN V 3000 EVS transmission.
