From Slow Roll to The Hub to Detroit Bikes and much more, Detroit has a cycling renaissance going on. NBC News spent more than seven minutes on bicycling and the Motor City.
As a bicycle commuter when the weather cooperates, there’s nothing better than Detroit by bike.
Most of greater downtown and all the way to Southwest up to Boston Edison to Indian Village is pretty accessible by pedal power.
Not to mention, bike commuting is on the rise in Detroit. At one point in the not too distant past, writing something like that would have been considered so absurd no one would believe it.
According to the League of American Bicyclists, Detroit has had the biggest increase in bike commuting of any major American city since 1990. Census data show that those commuting by car has fallen by 20% since 2007, while bike commuting has increased by 43%.
It turns out many of the tools used for making cars are also used for making bikes. So it’s not just enjoyment, it’s becoming an industry.
Maybe the Motor City will soon truly be Detroit Bike City.
Judging by the numbers of cyclists whirring past our window and the number we see on Monday nights and often on the way to work (even when the weather doesn’t always cooperate), it could only be a matter of time.
