A few days ago on September 20 the Detroit area welcomed our newest citizen, a giraffe. The calf is about five feet tall and weighs in at 150 pounds.
“The calf appears strong and healthy, all legs and very curious,” said Scott Carter, Detroit Zoological Society chief life sciences officer. “Kivuli (the mother) is showing great maternal care; she’s very attentive and affectionate.”
This video from the Detroit Zoo shows 5 year old Kivuli with her calf bonding. The calf’s gender is still not determined, and the father’s name is is Jabari and he is 6. The gestation period for the giraffe was 15 months. If you want to see the calf for yourself over the cold months, the baby giraffe will mostly be in the Giraffe House, but will come outside if weather permits.
