The Detroit Soul Skate is an annual event over the Memorial Day weekend. That’s right. Skate. Not skateboarders. Not in-line skates. Four wheels. Grown men and women on roller skates. The tricks they can do are pretty cool and it’s a peek into a part of Detroit culture you’re not going to see much in the mainstream media.
Venues such as Northland Roller Rink, the Magic Stick, Great Skate, and Bert’s Marketplace provided the backdrop. Performers included some decently well known names like Dwele, Chico Debarge, Louie Vega, Moodymann, Whodini, Amp Fiddler, Andres, and more.
Frankly, if we don’t find our way over there next year and give it one go around the rink we may have failed at life. It looks like a fun time. Take a look.
