Last weekend was great fun, and if all the green beer wasn’t enough there’s plenty more fun to be had this weekend. Friday the 20th is the Spring Equinox, which seems to be a good enough reason for us Detroiters to rock out all over again. If you look below at our City 5 picks for this week (which include numerous spring welcoming parties) you can tell that Detroiters agree unanimously that spring is here.
All Weekend – Freep Film Festival – This is a film festival with a mission to “showcase films that are about or relevant to Detroit, the region and Michigan in the hopes of fostering engagement and discussion about the issues and challenges we face while at the same time celebrating what makes us unique.” Click the schedule to buy tickets or find them through the box offices of the Detroit Film Theatre and Fillmore Detroit.
Friday – Moose Roof Spring Blowout Party – Here’s a live music and art party out on West Grand Blvd. with a host of local bands and artists for your enjoyment. Get strange and go for it. $5 after 10 pm.
Saturday – Haute to Death Equinox Edition – As always a classic Saturday Night Detroit party. This time H2D is geared up to bring the spring by getting you on the dance floor. Its a post-punk, new wave, italo disco, electrobotic and anything goes dance party that’ll get you funked up for the coming season of warm weather and good times. $2 before midnight, $3 after.
Sunday – The Marche du Nain Rouge – is a newer Detroit tradition that involves a New Orleans-esque costume parade to symbolically chase the “red dwarf”- a harbinger of doom that holds Detroit back from its potential – out of the city. It’s a a creatively conceived day party filled with food, drink, and theatrics. Last year the dwarf appeared on top of the fire-breathing dragon and the parade chased him out of the town. Wear a costume of your choosing and you’ll fit right in at this event. This event is free for the public.
Sunday – Family Day Extravaganza at the MOCAD – This family art day features craft making, live music, tasty snacks, and lots of wholesome good times. Melissa Detloff, a Detroit artist, leads this workshop that allows kids and parents alike to create a personalized stuffed animal pet. The workshop encourages everyone to dig deep into their imaginations to create a new creature of your own invention. This event is free and open to the public.
