A local coffee shop with a passionate following in the Southwest and New Center neighborhoods of the city, Cafe con Leche, is hosting a showcase created by local Detroit artists, “Windows on Frida.”
Cafe con Leche is a Detroit-based cafe serving Latin inspired food and beverages. They are teaming up with Art & Fashion Metropolitan Detroit, a collective that aims to inpsire, support, and showcase the work of local and international artists and designers in Detroit.
Together they created a show that honors the DIA’s special series on Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
“Right now there is a buzz around the city and everyone wants to learn more about the art icon Frida Kahlo,” said Myrna Segura, organizer and fashion designer. “We selected her because she is a very strong artist. She was vibrant, strong and resilient, a great example for Detroiters and all who face constant challenges in life.”
Art on display includes sculpture and jewelry by Mark Beltchenko, paintings by Elton Monroy Duran, ceramic pieces by Kia I. Arriaga and fashion designs are by Myrna Segura. All of the art and fashions on display will also be available for sale.
“Cafe Con Leche was a great fit for this showcase. Jordi and Melissa, owners of the café, have been promoting the work of local artists, featuring the Hispanic culture for years,” said Myrna Segura. “It’s a community space to meet and enjoy Detroit’s diverse culture.”
The art will be revealed during a special Opening Night Reception on May 30 from 5-9 p.m. at Cafe Con Leche Nord (their New Center location, across the street from the Fisher Building). Cafe Con Leche Nord is located at 2290 W. Grand Blvd. Detroit. Free and open to the public. Attire and accessories inspired by Frida are welcome.
