For some reason, the unseasonably warm temperatures on Wednesday have me feeling a little extra frisky for the weekend, so let’s all follow that impulse toward party heaven this weekend.
We’ve got a great mix of event lined up for this weekend, so without further ado, here’s your City 5 for December 5-7.
Duel in the D—Friday, 7:30p—Detroit
Most of us are big on celebrating the Michigan – Michigan football and basketball rivalry, but some might forget that the bad blood continues on the ice each year.
Well on Friday, the two teams face off at Joe Louis Arena for the annual Duel in the D, and it’s going to be a battle for the ages.
Ticket packages for the “Duel in the D” are now on sale at the Joe Louis Arena Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, and online.

PaczKi Run 2016—Saturday, 10 a.m. —Hamtramck
Fat Tuesday is one of the most marvelous days of the year in Hamtramck. I mean, when else do you have the opportunity to gorge yourself on gluttonous pastries and NOT feel bad about it?
If you’re one of the thousands of folks looking to engage in the festivities, then consider prepping your body for the imminent world of pain by signing up for the PaczKi run this Saturday.
Whether you’re running to battle the guilt of smashing a box of Paczkis, or simply looking for a great way to map out your pastry purchasing path on Fat Tuesday, then this race is right up your alley.
The 5K route winds through Hamtramck and highlights the best parts of the city. As an added bonus, once you cross the finish line you’ll enjoy a celebratory paczek and beer!
The run starts at 10 a.m. near Joseph Campau and Hanley streets. All proceeds from the event will benefit City of Hamtramck’s non-motorized infrastructure.

Wild Winter Weekends at the Detroit Zoo—Saturday, 11 a.m. —Royal Oak
The Zoo might not be the first place you’d consider spending a Saturday in February, but I highly suggest embracing the winter weather during the final Wild Winter Weekend events of the season.
This family friendly event is a fun way to experience the magic of the Zoo in winter, and features your favorite habitats indoors and out along with special activities, including children’s music, zookeeper talks, crafts and much more.
The event runs from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and all extra events and activities are rolled into the regular cost of admission.

Masquerade at the Scarab Club – Saturday – Detroit
If you’re bummed you’re not on a plane to New Orleans for Mardi Gras right now, I’ve got just the thing to ease your pain.
The Scarab club’s mardi gras masquerade event features all the debaucherous fun of a Mardi Gras masquerade ball for a reasonable price and in one of Detroit’s best venues.
The three story Scarab in Midtown is normally home to galleries, artist studios, sessions and more, but has also been hosting Masquerade since 1917.
The dynamic event will feature an open bar, Music from RJ Spängler’s NOLA Band, live entertainment in the gallery and lounge, and great Creole Food like Cajun Chicken Bites with Creole Mayo, jambalaya Skewers and more.

Dilla Youth Day—Sunday, 12 p.m. —Detroit
On Sunday, celebrate one of Detroit’s most celebrated artists, J Dilla, with the annual Dilla Youth Day Event at the Charles H. Wright African American Museum.
For the second year in a row The Foundation of Women in Hip Hop has partnered with The Charles H Wright Museum to uplift the legacy of J Dilla as a significant African American Musical Producer who created the genre Neo-Soul and revolutionized the sound of 90’s Hip Hop, which accelerated the careers of successful Artists such as Erykah Badu, Common, Talib Kweli, DeLaSoul, Janet Jackson, and influenced many others up to our current generation.
This year is particularly special because Dilla Youth Day falls on February 7, 2016, Dilla’s actual birthday and during the 10th Anniversary of his passing from Lupus.
The event is loaded with great classes, workshops and other content, and it’s free to attend, so don’t miss the chance to learn about this remarkable artist, and pick up some great skills along the way.
